Illinois State

The Redbirds salvaged an uninspiring start to the season by winning their final two games of the Cayman Islands Classic against Akron and Boise State. Those wins won’t generate the at-large buzz many thought this Illinois State was capable of, but they were solid (and stabilizing) nonetheless.

The Redbirds have a golden opportunity to put the pedal down on that momentum with home games against BYU and San Diego State over the next week.

– Western Kentucky is another UTR team that came into the season with at-large tournament hopes, but those prospects took a hit with a 63-54 loss at Indiana State. The Trees may be a team worth watching in the Missouri Valley – they’ll have another good UTR test when Wright State comes to town next Saturday.
Hard in the Paint: Stroud emerges, Kessler updates recruitment--24/7 Sports
Junior combo guard Brandon Stroud emerges

Brandon Stroud, a 2020 combo guard out of Sharpburg (Ga.) East Coweta, emerged as a budding prospect on Friday evening against Montgomery (Ala.) Carver.

Stroud immediately stood out due to his physical tools. He has good size for the position (6-foot-5), ridiculously long arms and is an above average athlete.

The combo guard impressed with his playmaking ability, feel as a passer and he consistently got in the paint. In our viewing, Stroud made shots from mid-range, the three-point stripe and made his way to the free throw line often.

“I’m passing and shooting really, one dribble pull-ups, whatever my team needs to win but I like to dribble, pass and shoot really,” Stroud said when asked to describe his game.

Stroud has flown under the radar, but after growing six inches over the past year and a half, he’s started to garner more attention.

Stroud said his recruitment picked up some following his summer playing with Big Shots. He said he’s taken unofficial visits to Liberty and Indiana State. Georgia and Alabama were among the schools that evaluated him this weekend.
