What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/30/2023

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Thursday, Nov 30th--Hoops HD

NEWS AND NOTES:

-After a crazy-good start to the season, Evansville lost their first game of the year on the road at Missouri State 90-78 in their conference opener.

-Bradley, who had looked outstanding on the year so far, also lost their conference opener at Murray STate 79-72. Murray State isn’t the easiest place to go and win, but as good as Bradley had looked coming into this game it was still a bit of a surprise that they didn’t get it done.

Under the Radar (Nov 29th)--Hoops HD

Tonight’s feature conference is the Missouri Valley, which actually started conference play this week. Multiple teams such as Bradley, Indiana State, and Evansville are off to great starts for the season, but Bradley actually lost their conference opener tonight. We discuss whether or not we feel this league can get teams inside the bubble, and look at what they have to do in order to make it happen.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/29/2023

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Wednesday, Nov 29th--Hoops HD

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-EVANSVILLE AT MISSOURI STATE (Missouri Valley). Evansville may be one of the bigger surprises in all of college basketball so far. They’re 6-0, and while they haven’t been knocking off top 25 teams, their wins haven’t just been home buy games either, and the fact that they’ve been beating anyone at all is sort of a surprise. They have a really nice road win at Chattanooga, and can get another one in their conference opener tonight against a Missouri State team that is also off to a good start at 5-1, and who won the Paradise Jam earlier this season.

-DRAKE AT VALPARAISO (Missouri Valley). Drake has just one loss, and I still really like this team and think they can land inside the bubble. These are the kinds of games they need to routinely win in order to get there, though.

-BRADLEY AT MURRAY STATE (Missouri Valley). Bradley is off to an unbelievably good 6-0 start with some pretty good wins on their resume for now. This is a conference road game that isn’t easy to win, but if the Braves want to show they’re a tournament team then they need to be able to routinely win these kinds of games.

  • Bit of a weird spot for Bradley, with a trip to Murray State sandwiched between a big home game with Vermont and hosting a major MVC contender in Indiana State on Sat, but that’s all sort of negated by this being the conference opener and the veteran Braves remembering what happened last year in Murray...

Third Week Women’s Stars--Valley Hoops Insider

MVC Third Week Women’s Stars

Southern Illinois’ Laniah Randle became the first non-Iowa-based player to claim the Valley’s ‘Player of the Week‘ award. While the Salukis were winning a pair of games, Randle was pouring on the offense. The junior averaged 24.7 points and 8.3 rebounds. She follows Drake’s Grace Berg and Northern Iowa’s Grace Boffeli as a weekly winner.

Indiana State’s Kiley Bess became the first non-Illinois-based player to claim the Valley’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ award. Bess is Indiana State’s leading scorer (12.2 ppg) and ranks among the MVC’s top twenty in several statistical categories. Bradley’s Kaylen Nelson and Illinois Chicago’s Makiyah Williams earned the season’s first two weekly nods.

Evansville’s Maggie Hartwig became the first Valley player not named Jaylin Banks (Belmont) to claim the Valley’s ‘Freshman of the Week‘ award. Hartwig recorded a double-double (18 points & 15 rebounds) during the Purple Aces’ first win of the season.

Under the Radar Game of the Day (Southern Illinois at Indiana State) – Tuesday, November 28th--Hoops HD
News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Tuesday, Nov 28th--Hoops HD

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT INDIANA STATE (Missouri Valley). Conference play is underway! The MVC has collectively won a lot of games and has collectively played well so far, and it wouldn’t shock me at all to see them get multiple teams into the field. Southern Illinois’s only loss was a close one to James Madison, and to get this win on the road would add a nice early season sparkle to their resume. Indiana State also has just one loss, but like Southern Illinois, doesn’t really have any notable wins yet.

  • There are coaches that use “pace and space” as buzzwords, and then there’s Josh Schertz. Indiana State is one of the elite uptempo, rim and 3 offenses in the country... and now they have to enter the grind of Valley play hosting Southern Illinois, but the analytical bones of this offense is unquestionably rock solid...

MVC Week Three Stars

Missouri State’s Matthew Lee took over the Paradise Jam. The Saint Peters transfer was named the MVP of the Paradise Jam and then scored 28 points during the Bears win over South Carolina State. Lee leads the Valley in assists (5.7 per game) and is this league’s ‘Player of the Week‘. The point guard is averaging 12.5 points per game and is making over 82% from the charity stripe. Lee missed all but two Missouri State games last season.

Evansville’s Ben Humrichous’ outstanding season continues. The NAIA transfer averaged 27.5 points per game this week and leads the Purple Aces in scoring (19.0 ppg), field goal percentage (.620) and in three-point shooting. This week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ is converting .485 from deep and making 2.67 triples per game.

Cooper Schwieger’s play makes people forget he is a freshman. His game is so under control and efficient that Valparaiso has been able to depend on the 6’8 wing. Schwieger averaged 15 points and five rebounds during Valpo’s MTE action. The ‘Freshman of the Week‘ is part of an exciting youth movement that finds a significant number of under classmen in Roger Powell’s rotation.

Bradley is also 6-0 on the season, the program’s best start since 1985-86. The Braves jumped to No. 9 from a tie for 19 last week. They earned a 79-70 win over Vermont in their most recent game. They were hot in the opening 20 minutes by knocking down eight 3-pointers before halftime.

Earlier in the season, Bradley secured wins over UAB and Utah State.

The Braves are 77th in KenPom and 79th in Torvik.

NEWS AND NOTES:

-UIC vs UNC Greensboro in the Baha Mar Hoops final was a wild game with a crazy finish. UIC hit a go ahead jumper with about 7 seconds left to take a 57-56 lead. We then had a video review for what seemed like forever to determine whether or not he got the shot off in time before the shotclock expired (thanks to Chad Sherwood for clarifing that for me. I was watching with the sound off). After that, UNCG went the length of the floor, lost the ball, got it back, and got fouled in the final seconds. They hit both freethrows for the 58-57 win, they won the event, and improve to 5-1 on the year with a pretty impressive looking resume. As for UIC, they did lose the game, but they have also been one of the more surprising UTR teams this year. I thought they’d be a doormat in the Missouri Valley, but they’ve had some nice wins and almost beat a really good UNC Greensboro team yesterday.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/26/2023

NCAA Basketball: Michigan, Stanford, Texas Tech and Northern Iowa takeaways from Battle 4 Atlantis--Busting Brackets

7th place – Northern Iowa Panthers

Positive takeaway: Nate Hiese is healthy and effective

A year ago, the 6’4 guard was just limited to just two games due to injury and the Panthers missed him very much. Heise was the MVP for the team in these three games, averaging around 16 ppg, including 15 pts and 6 rebs against Stanford. He’s currently the leading scorer on the team and with last year’s top scorer Bowen Born back, this team could have the offense needed to compete in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Negative takeaway: Need better second-half defensive efforts

Despite being the mid-major of the field, Northern Iowa proved to be very capable in this field, having a second-half lead in all three games. But they blew two of them, both that was by 10+ points. The defense struggled in them and while it’s a bit unfair against bigger teams like UNC and Texas Tech, the Panthers will leave wondering “what if” those big runs weren’t allowed.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Sunday, Nov 26th--Hoops HD

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Evansville is also 6-0 after their blowout win against SEMO. That is VERY surprising! How about the Aces!!!!

-Bradley also improved to 6-0 with a home win over a solid Vermont team. Bradley, Princeton, and Liberty have all looked like top 40ish caliber teams so far.

MTE Sweeping Success--Valley Hoops Insider

A Thanksgiving weekend of mixed results--nashvillehoops.blog

Belmont

The Bruins were 2-1 in the Cathedral of College Basketball Classic at the Palestra in Philadelphia. But even in two victories, the Bruins (4-3) looked like they need to get better in a number of areas.

Coach Casey Alexander is trying different combinations, different rotations. What he can count on is forward Cade Tyson (consecutive games of 22, 26 and 19 points) and point guard Ja’Kobi Gillespie, who is the one player who can bail the Bruins out when they need a key play.

Malik Dia, obviously talented, has been inconsistent. He only scored two points in the loss to Monmouth, which totally outplayed the Bruins. He bounced back with 27 in a win over Penn and 18 against Lafayette. Belmont needs him to be a factor every night.

The rest of the roster has also been inconsistent, most notably fifth-year guard Keishawn Davidson, who had a tough weekend, shooting 2 for 13 and scoring 8 points.

Alexander doesn’t have much time to experiment as the Missouri Valley Conference season starts Wednesday when the Bruins travel to Northern Iowa. Valparaiso comes to Nashville Saturday.

The MVC is looking tough. The league was 7-0 Saturday which is the best one-day record since a 9-0 day in 2004, according to the league.  Bradley and Drake have quickly asserted themselves as top teams. The surprise has been Evansville, which is 6-0 for the first time since 1964-65, the season when the Aces won the national championship in what was then called the College Division. Anyone remember Jerry Sloan? The great NBA player and coach was the star of that team.

Back in 2022, Matthew Lee was a starter on the magical St. Peter’s team that went to the Elite Eight. He parlayed that run into an up-transfer to Missouri State, but his debut season with the Bears was cut short after just two starts due to a torn ACL. He’s back now, though, and he made a huge mark this week to earn MVP honors at the Paradise Jam. When the team returned to the mainland, Lee exploded for a career-high 28 points against SC State — including going 14-of-16 from the stripe, doubling his previous career-high for free throws in a game.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/25/2023

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Nov 25th--Hoops HD

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Evansville, a team that none of us thought would do anything, is now 5-0 with two true road wins as they came from behind at Chattanooga and handed them their first loss of the year. I’m starting to believe in the Aces! (At least a little bit).

-Indiana State is now 5-1 with a win over a fairly decent Toledo team. The Missouri Valley Conference and the Ivy League are two conferences to really start watching. Multiple teams from those leagues are starting to bloat out their records, and they’re not doing it by simply staying at home and playing buy games. They’re going to these MTEs and going out on the road and winning.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-VERMONT AT BRADLEY. This is another outstanding UTR game that features two teams whose seasons are off to outstanding starts. Bradley is unbeaten with notable wins at UAB, and against Utah State, Tulane, and UTEP. In fact Utah State, Tulane, and UTEP each have just one loss right now, and Bradley is the team that beat all of them. Vermont comes in with just one loss and is looking (again) like an America East frontrunner.

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES/BUY GAMES:

-Evansville vs SEMO (Chattanooga TN)- Evansville had a big win yesterday against Chattanooga, and is looking to follow it up today

Successful MTE Season Continues--Valley Hoops Insider
MVC Notebook | Valley schools playing at home Saturday to open playoffs--The Southern Illinoisan

THE BRADLEY BRAND

Drake was the preseason favorite in Valley hoops but Bradley has made a statement to start the season. The Braves own a win at UAB that might be a Quad 1 all year and also beat Utah State, an NCAA tourney team last year.

For good measure, Bradley won the SoCal Challenge on Wednesday night in a high school gym in San Juan Capistrano, Calif. by stifling previously unbeaten UTEP in a 63-59 win. The Miners made only 21 of 57 shots and committed 17 turnovers against the long-armed, quick-footed Braves.

Given the way it’s defending, Bradley has a chance to stay unbeaten for a while, even though it opens conference play Wednesday night at Murray State and hosts Indiana State next Saturday.

THREE-DOT STUFF

Indiana State’s men’s basketball team continues to showcase a high-powered offense. The Sycamores have scored 100 points twice in the first five games and has reached at least 81 points in every game.
