What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/16/2018

Quick Takes: Hello, Michigan – and – B10--Bracketville
Other Quick Takes …
...
The Missouri Valley is taking some early body blows. Illinois State lost at Belmont and then trailed Chicago State late before escaping with a four-point win.
...
Buffalo picked up another quality road win by taking down Southern Illinois in Carbondale. It’s too early to get too excited, obviously, but the Bulls are worth watching as a potential at-large team from the MAC.

NEWS AND NOTES

-I’ll begin by mentioning a game that most of the country wasn’t even aware of, and that’s Chicago State at Illinois State. Chicago State is a perpetually pitiful program, and based on how they had played so far this year things didn’t look to be getting any better. But with less than three minutes to go they had a lead at Illinois State, who we feel is at least a likely NIT team. Had Chicago State won this game, I would rate it as a bigger upset (at least in regards as to how far apart the two teams appeared to be) than when UMBC beat Virginia last year. They weren’t able to hold on, but it was an impressive showing for a team and program that has had so few impressive showings in the last thirty years. Hopefully they are able to build from this and experience some moments of success this year.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES
...
-NIAGARA AT LOYOLA CHICAGO. Niagara comes into this game with a home win over Saint Bonaventure, and Loyola is looking to rebound from a rather surprising loss to Furman in their first game.

The Ramblers got major contributions during their Final Four season from a trio of Chicago-area players: Simeon’s Donte Ingram (now departed) and then-freshmen Cameron Krutwig of Jacobs and Lucas Williamson of Young.

That run paid dividends locally with two area players among the three who signed Wednesday. Naperville North forward Tom Welch and Brother Rice point guard Marquise Kennedy are joined in the class by shooting guard Paxson Wojcik of La Lumiere School in La Porte, Ind.

The 6-8 Welch and the 6-1 Kennedy are the Nos. 5 and 6 prospects in the state according to the composite rankings. Welch also had reported offers from Mississippi and Southern Illinois, while Kennedy chose Loyola over Wichita State, Florida State and Illinois State.

“This class fits with everything we are trying to do here — recruit high-character, tough, skilled players,” coach Porter Moser said in a statement. “Watching them interact with our coaches, staff and players, you could tell that all three were perfect fits for Loyola. The underlying theme with all three individuals was how much winning mattered to them.”
