What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/12/2018

The Morning Dish – Friday, November 9, 2018--Hoopville
On the other end of the spectrum for debuts was that for Walter McCarty at Evansville. The former Kentucky star and recent Boston Celtics assistant saw the Purple Aces get drilled 99-60 by Illinois, with the Fighting Illini running away on a 38-8 run in the first half.

Illinois looked more like a Brad Underwood team prefers to, playing fast, forcing a bunch of turnovers and shooting 56.3%. For Evansville, the return home of native son McCarty has brought a surge of excitement locally, but the Aces’ outlook for year one is not pretty. UE already had a stripped-down roster for this season, and it was even shorter with the announcement before the game of center Dainius Chatkevicius being suspended three games for a violation of team rules.

Tonight’s Menu. The first Friday night of the season frankly features a much better schedule than Tuesday, with all kinds of options.
...
It’s not a good time for Southern Illinois to be playing Kentucky (7 p.m., SEC Network), after the Wildcats were dismantled by Duke on Tuesday. The Salukis will give it a shot and have a lot of experience, but UK will be supremely motivated and this is not an easy task.
The Morning Dish – Saturday, November 10, 2018--Hoopville
In the Midwest, Furman went to Loyola-Chicago and edged the Ramblers 60-58 on a dunk with less than two seconds to play. Naturally, this game is noteworthy as much because of the Ramblers’ magical Final Four run last season as anything else, but it is a nice win for Furman as they improve to 2-0.

Tonight’s Menu

It’s a fairly busy day of action, though not as busy as Friday night as football takes center stage. Here are some that stand out.
...
Evansville tries to bounce back from their season-opening loss to Illinois as they visit Xavier, while Oklahoma State travels to take on Charlotte (4 p.m.)
...
Also tipping at 8 p.m. are a pair of nice mid-major matchups involving Missouri Valley teams: Northern Iowa at UT Arlington and Illinois State at Belmont.

NEWS AND NOTES
...
-Loyola Chicago made a surprise run in the NCAA Tournament last year. The surprises continued last night, but not the good kind. Furman went up to Loyola for what had to be their biggest home opener in half a century, and pulled off a stunning upset. It isn’t that we were shocked that Loyola failed to win so much as it is a Furman team, who wasn’t exactly our pick to win the SoCon, was able to play as well as they did and beat them. It was one of the many exciting games that came down to the final seconds.

-ILLINOIS STATE AT BELMONT. A pretty good UTR game between an Illinois State team that we think will be one of the better teams in the Missouri Valley, and a Belmont team that’s opening its season and who we think will be the frontrunner the Ohio Valley.

Furman dunks on Loyola Chicago before the buzzer

I’ll spare the details of the rest of the game as I was unable to watch it. However, I did see the finish to the game going around on Twitter. Take a look:

A BACKDOOR CUT LEADING TO A POSTER DUNK FOR THE WIN. GLORIOUS.

That’s a great win for Furman and an awful loss for a Loyola Chicago team that still had outside hopes at an at-large bid.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS at No. 2 KENTUCKY, 7:00 p.m.

Line: Kentucky (-17)
O/U: 148.5
Vegas Implied Score: Kentucky 82.75, Southern Illinois 65.75
KenPom Projection: Kentucky 82, Southern Illinois 68

Southern Illinois is good this year. They are right there with Loyola-Chicago and Illinois State as the early favorites in the Missouri Valley. They are coming off of a season where they won 21 games and went 11-7 in the league and they bring back five starters from last season, four of whom will be seniors this year. The Salukis actually rank in KenPom’s top 100 right now.

So Kentucky is going to have a tough, veteran opponent on their hands. This is the kind of game that John Calipari’s teams have struggled with over the years. Last season, three of their first four buy games were decided by 10 points or less, and the Wildcats very nearly lost at home to Vermont. That Kentucky (-17) line is a lot of points — the spread is three points higher than KenPom’s projected spread, which is the kind of inefficiency we like to capitalize on — but it’s the narrative here that has me rethinking what looks like an obvious bet on paper.

I thought Kentucky was the second-best team in the country entering Tuesday’s embarrassing demolition at the hands of Duke. I was far from alone in that sentiment, and I still think this is a team with a nice blend of youth, talent and experience. So there are two questions you need to answer before you invest any money on this line:

Did Tuesday’s game get out of hand because Kentucky is not as good as we thought they were, or was this a team that got blitzkrieged in a bad matchup and rolled over once they realized — like everyone else on the planet — that the game was over midway through the first half? If you believe that’s the case, then …
… what do you think practice was like for the last two days? John Calipari is a notoriously tough coach. He connects with his guys and he understands the psychology that comes with being a superstar at such a young age, but he holds them accountable and he does it in a way that is not always pleasant to be on the receiving end of. Kentucky is going to want to make a statement tonight.

PICKS: Generally speaking, I think the process play here is to take SIU. Good, veteran mid-major programs can create some problems for young Kentucky teams even when the games are played in Rupp. But I’m going to try to avoid overreacting to one game, trust that my sense of this Kentucky team entering the season was correct and assume that one of the nation’s elite teams is going to come out on Friday night and remind everyone that they are, in fact, one of the nation’s elite teams. Kentucky (-17) is where my money will be.
Bracket Games: Buffalo-SIU headline UTR matchups this week--Bracketville
Buffalo at Southern Illinois (Monday) – MAC favorite Buffalo arrives in Carbondale fresh off its upset of West Virginia in Morgantown. Southern Illinois isn’t WVU, but they are one of this year’s MVC favorites and hung with Kentucky in Lexington until late in the game. Think of this as a kind of retired “Bracket Buster” game we used to see in February.

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT KENTUCKY. Kentucky was blown through the roof in their opener against Duke. They’re back at home against a far more manageable opponent tonight, but this is a VERY good Southern Illinois team. We like this team so much that we think they can make the NCAA Tournament, and if they can pick up a few wins in games like this they won’t need to win the conference tournament to do it. I have to give props to Kentucky. They always schedule an early game against a very good UTR team. They hosted Vermont early in the season last year.
