Loyola (Ill.) topped Niagara 75-62. Cameron Krutwig is a big key to the Ramblers’ season as a big man with the potential to be one of the best in the country, and he was perfect from the field (7-for-7) in going for 18 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots.

The Myrtle Beach event opens with Saint Joseph’s with a golden chance to beat an ACC team when it faces Wake Forest (11:30 a.m., ESPNU). Central Florida against Cal State Fullerton is very intriguing, Valparaiso faces depleted Western Kentucky (5 p.m., ESPNU) and West Virginia takes on Monmouth (7:30 p.m., ESPNU).
Feast Week 2018: Previewing the statement opportunities for mid-major teams--Mid-Major Madness
Caymen Islands Classic

Field: Akron, Clemson, Illinois State, Georgia, St. Bonaventure, Georgia State, Boise State, Creighton

Teams to watch:

Illinois State: We can pretend the near disaster against Chicago State never happened, but it was pretty discouraging to see it after the Redbirds let Belmont hang 100 on them. They’ll look to right the ship against the Fightin’ Tom Creans in game one, and no matter what happens there, Illinois State is guaranteed to play St. Bonaventure, Georgia State, Boise State, or Creighton on day three.
...
Fort Myers Tip-Off

Field: Boston College, Loyola University Chicago, Richmond, Wyoming

Team to watch:

Loyola: Loyola’s home loss to Furman was quite a harsh welcome back to Earth following the Ramblers’ Final Four run last season. The good news is that the Valley is up this year and they’ll have an opportunity to make up for it. The Fort Myers field isn’t great, but the Ramblers can, feasibly, beat both an Atlantic 10 and ACC team.

Las Vegas Holiday Invitational

Field: Nevada, UMass, Southern Illinois, Tulsa

Team to watch:

Southern Illinois: OK, like in Maui, you should also be watching the best team in this tournament. Nevada, in this case. But for now, Southern Illinois might be more interesting. The Salukis went toe-to-toe with Kentucky in Rupp before losing a close one to Buffalo at home. When they face UMass next week, it’ll be the highly anticipated Pippen vs. Pipkens matchup.*

*One is 5’11 and the other is 6’10 so fine it’s not really a matchup but it sounds fun

-NORTHERN IOWA VS PENN (Paradise Jam). Penn is off to a great start this year, and can land on the national stage if they do well in this tournament. A win today gets them to 4-0 and puts them on the winner’s side of the bracket.

-GRAMBLING AT LOYOLA CHICAGO. We will go ahead and highlight this one simply because Grambling appears to be one of the better teams in the SWAC. It could end up being rather lopsided, but who knows?

Is anyone good? Right now, it’s hard to look at any team and think, “hey, that team is good”. The most impressive team thus far has probably been Bradley. The league is not necessarily bad though. I think the perception of the league has taken a hit because of the early losses by Loyola Chicago, Illinois State and Southern Illinois. I think all three of those teams will have figured things out by the time conference play rolls around. It’s early. Things will work out.

-VALPARAISO VS WESTERN KENTUCKY (Myrtle Beach Invitational). It is really important for WKU to pick up some big wins in this tournament. Although C-USA is off to a strong start, their chances at quality wins in the second half of the season are going to be limited, so if they want to be in the safe zone for an at-large then this tournament is crucial.
