Two MVC schools improving to 7-0 were Loyola (Ill.) and Valparaiso, as the Ramblers rolled over Kent State 75-60 and Valpo rallied back to top UNC Wilmington 79-70. On the other hand for the Valley, Illinois State lost to Charleston Southern at home in overtime 64-62. Barclay Radebaugh seems to have the Buccaneers put a scare into someone at least once every year, and what a great win for CSU. For the Redbirds, it’s clear that at least early on this is going to be a roller coaster of a year, with glimpses of greatness as well as stretches that make one scratch their head.

Some teams that bear watching over the next month to see if they keep rolling in non-conference play: New Mexico State is now 4-1 after handling Texas-El Paso 72-63, Murray State defeated Southern Illinois 81-73 with Jonathan Stark scoring another 27 points, Bradley moved to 6-1 after grinding out a 62-57 win over Georgia Southern, and Bowling Green is now 5-1 after winning at Campbell 78-72.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/24/2017

The Morning Dish – Friday, November 25, 2017--Hoopville
Northern Iowa was a top-15 team as recently as 2015 and just missed out on the Sweet 16 in 2016. When many proclaimed the Missouri Valley Conference to be in trouble after the departure of Wichita State this summer, it was a clear slight of a UNI program that has more than its share of accomplishments the last 12 years.

After an uncharacteristically disappointing 2016-17 season, the Panthers are back-again-with two consecutive impressive wins in the Battle 4 Atlantis, the latest a 64-60 victory over North Carolina State in the semifinals on Thursday. UNI won the battle of tempo with a team that had defeated Arizona the day before, and it got a tremendous game from Tywhon Pickford, a 6-foot-4 guard who is quickly becoming one of the most productive freshmen anywhere in the country. Pickford finished with 18 points and 18 rebounds-his fourth double-digit rebounding game this season-and Northern Iowa now is an improbable finalist at Atlantis, where it will meet Villanova. This tourney has already been a success for UNI and the MVC, which has had an outstanding start and ranked sixth in the conference RPI entering Thursday.

Today’s Menu:

Who would’ve thought it would be Villanova against Northern Iowa for the Battle 4 Atlantis, but that’s exactly the case as a pair of defense-minded teams meet (Noon, ESPN2). There are good matchups all day here in the Bahamas, with N.C. State against Tennessee for third place (2:30 p.m., ESPN), SMU vs. Western Kentucky for fifth place and Purdue against Arizona-in theory a Sweet 16 matchup in the March-for seventh and the right to avoid an 0-3 tournament performance.

A pair of undefeated MVC teams play intriguing games in the Savannah Invitational, with Loyola (Ill.) against UNC Wilmington and Valparaiso matched with Kent State.

They’ve managed two nice wins against SMU and NC State, but they’re really swinging for the mo0n today.

There’s a bow on the Valley’s hot start

The Missouri Valley is off to a great collective start, but marquee wins had been lacking. Northern Iowa has changed that in the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Panthers beat a quality SMU team in their opener, and then downed a North Carolina State team that had just beaten No. 2 Arizona. Freshman wing Tywhon Pickford had an absurd 18 points and 18 rebounds in the win. The Panthers have a Friday date in the title game with No. 5 Villanova based mainly on their defense. In both wins in the Bahamas, they held their non-mid-major opponent to under 0.94 points per possession or less.

Side Dishes:

Don’t look now, but Valparaiso is now 5-0 after pulling away for an 88-67 win over Samford. The schedule has been quite accommodating, but the Crusaders are winning by an average of 31.6 points per game.

-EVANSVILLE VS LOUISIANA TECH (Cancun Challenge). Both teams come in undefeated, and LA Tech picked up a nice win yesterday against what appears to be a rather solid George Mason team.
...
-SMU VS NORTHERN IOWA (Battle 4 Atlantis). SMU is unbeaten and untested so far. This tournament is a chance for them to add some quality wins to their resume. They don’t want to overlook a UNI team that comes in 3-1.
The Morning Dish – Thursday, November 23, 2017--Hoopville
The night ended with one more surprise, as Northern Iowa upended SMU 61-58. This was a classic slow-paced, efficient Ben Jacobson-led UNI win, as the Panthers shot well (48%) and outrebounded the Mustangs solidly (37-27). Spencer Haldeman scored 15 big points off the bench, and the Panthers move on and now will have a classic contrast in styles game in the semifinals against N.C. State.

Side Dishes:
...
Another fantastic finish came in the Cancun Challenge, as Louisiana Tech’s Derrick Jean hit a three-pointer with one second left to give the Bulldogs a 63-61 win over Evansville. The Purple Aces came so close to a very nice early season tourney championship, leading 58-51 with just over five minutes left, but Tech rallied to pull out a battle of undefeateds.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/21/2017

Scanning the Nation Notebook for Nov. 20 – Notes from CBB’s 2nd weekend--Hoopville
The Puerto Rico Tip-Off tourney illustrated just how wildly teams’ performances and fortunes can change from one day to the next in tournament play. In the quarterfinals, Illinois State played a terrific game in edging South Carolina, while UTEP had Boise State all but beaten before faltering in the final minutes. One might’ve thought the Redbirds would’ve had an edge the next day, but Boise suddenly turned into an offensive machine, Chandler Hutchison was dominant and ISU looked horrendous, needing a late rally to lose 82-64. Just before that, the Gamecocks drubbed the UTEP team that should’ve been playing Illinois State. At least some clarity was found Sunday, as Illinois State again played very well in handling Tulsa, and South Carolina took care of Western Michigan for the second time this season.
...
We mentioned last week that the Missouri Valley Conference got off to a good start over the first weekend, and it’s generally continued since, Indiana State’s 0-3 performance in the Charleston Classic and league favorite Missouri State tripping up at home against North Dakota State notwithstanding. The dramatically underrated aspect of the MVC often is how strong the bottom of the league is. Of the league’s biggest name-brand wins early on, it should be noted two of them (Indiana State over Indiana, Drake vs. Wake Forest) were recorded by teams that tied for last in the league last year. Meanwhile, a Bradley team that played on Thursday in a play-in contest at Arch Madness lost by one to a touted Vermont team that nearly knocked off Kentucky. Even last year, it was Indiana State-not Wichita State, Northern Iowa or anyone else-that posted the league’s best non-conference win, knocking off Butler. The Valley may not have its bellwether big names anymore, but it still is much deeper in quality than most and more like an Atlantic 10 or Mountain West than it is a bottom half conference in Division I.
...
Vermont defeated Bradley by one point in the quarterfinals and then nipped Northern Kentucky by two in the title game for the Island of the Bahamas Classic.

Sunday Recap: Colorado Remains Perfect, Miles Bridges, and a Quadruple Overtime Thriller--College Court Report
Indiana State and Ohio play a Quadruple Overtime Thriller

Sunday gave us the longest game of the season so far, as the Indiana State Sycamores and Ohio Bobcats needed four overtimes to settle their final contest at the Gildan Charleston Classic. In the end, Ohio came away with the 96-94 win, clinching seventh place at the event.

The teams went back and forth over the first three overtime periods, with nothing being settled. In the fourth overtime, Mike Laster scored the go-ahead basket with 1:25 to play, and the Bobcats didn’t look back. Ohio had three players score 20 or more points, led by Laster, who scored a game-high 25 points.

Indiana State had six players score in double-figures, led by Jordan Barnes, who had 16 points and six assists in 49 minutes of action.

Other Notables from Sunday

Loyola (IL) Ramblers 88, Samford Bulldogs 67
The Ramblers improved to a perfect 4-0 on the year with the win over the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-3. Loyola (IL) was led by Clayton Custer, who recorded 19 points and eight assists in the win. In total, four Ramblers scored in double-figures.

The Gulf Coast Showcase opened with quarterfinal games. Missouri-Kansas City surprised Manhattan 74-63-the Jaspers were coming off a win over Harvard-and the Sun Belt’s Georgia Southern nipped Missouri State 74-73 to move to 4-0. Those two meet in one semifinal; the other will have Pennsylvania-a 93-80 winner over Northern Illinois-against Towson, now quite possibly the tourney favorite after a 76-52 roll past Florida Atlantic.

My big weekend wrapup: UT Arlington and Northern Kentucky make early statements--Mid-Major Madness
Game of the Weekend:

Ohio 96 Indiana State 94 (4OT), Charleston Classic

The quadruple overtime game has to be the game of the weekend, right? Ohio came back from down 17 in the second half to pull out a thrilling win behind 25 points from Mike Laster, 21 from Jordan Dartis, and 20 from Teyvion Kirk. Down 16 with just over 11 minutes to go in regulation, the Bobcats reeled off an 18-2 run over the next five minutes to draw even. Laster put the Bobcats up for good on a layup with 1:35 left and Indiana State’s Brenton Scott missed a three at the buzzer that would have won it.

-MISSOURI STATE VS GEORGIA SOUTHERN. Georgia Southern is off to a 3-0 start with a notable (at least for now) win at Wake Forest. Missouri State has dropped a game, but we still like their team and they can emerge as a contender for the NCAAs if they do well in this tournament.
