Missouri State announced that Obediah Church will not be returning to the team and that he and the team have officially, in MSU’s words, “parted ways.” Church has not played for the Bears since mid-December after starting the team’s first 11 games and for most of his previous three seasons as well. A prolific shotblocker, the 6-foot-7 Church became just the sixth player in Missouri Valley Conference history to record 200 blocks. The Bears have played well of late, though, and really since transfer Tulio da Silva got eligible and rolling. MSU is currently one of the hottest teams in the MVC and has won four of six to move to 10-11 overall and 4-4 in the Valley entering a Tuesday night tilt at Valparaiso.

At one time in the Missouri Valley, Valparaiso was on top with a 4-0 mark. On Tuesday night, the Crusaders lost their third straight and fourth of five, this one a 55-54 overtime loss to Missouri State, who joins them with a 5-4 conference mark. The last two losses have come at home, and now they go on the road for two straight and then get a visit from Loyola-Chicago, who handled them in their first meeting.

Here’s a great note worth sharing from the Missouri Valley: Loyola-Chicago, who moved to 6-2 with a 75-50 romp over Southern Illinois on Sunday, is the first team to be on both sides of a 35-point margin in the same season, and if the Ramblers are to win the conference as they were picked to before the season, they would join Illinois State (co-champions with Wichita State in 2016-17) as the only Valley team to lose a game by at least 35 points and go on to win the regular season title.

The Missouri Valley Conference reprimanded Illinois State head coach Dan Muller on Friday after prior comments about officiating. Asked about a technical foul he was given after Wednesday night’s loss at Bradley, Muller said, “I didn’t deserve it at all. The most ridiculous call I’ve ever seen. I didn’t say one word. It was a topsy-turvy night in the Missouri Valley as both teams tied for the top spot went down, which will tighten things up a bit. Indiana State took care of Valparaiso 70-53, but more shocking is Loyola-Chicago getting annihilated 70-35 at Missouri State, with the Bears outscoring the Ramblers 40-11 in the second half.
