2018 College Hoops Year In Review: The 12 most memorable moments from the last year--College Basketball Talk
5. The national emergence of Loyola (Chicago) and Sister Jean during a Cinderella run

College basketball has increasingly become a sport of blueblood programs and elite players. Which is why Loyola captured the nation’s attention as the fun underdog during an improbable run to the 2018 Final Four.

The Missouri Valley Conference champions hadn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 1985. But the No. 11 seed Ramblers showed a special ability to win in tight games thanks in-part to a tremendous, unselfish veteran core and Sister Jean, the school’s 98-year-old nun who became a national sensation.

Loyola won its opening-round game against No. 6 seed Miami on a Donte Ingram three-pointer and followed that up with back-to-back one-point wins over No. 3 seed Tennessee and No. 7 seed Nevada. After dispatching No. 9 seed Kansas State by double digits in the Elite Eight, Loyola became just the fifth double-digit seed to make the Final Four.

The Ramblers lost to Michigan in the national semifinals, but they made a huge imprint on college hoops. Head coach Porter Moser earned well-deserved praise and a contract extension. Recruiting has picked up at Loyola.

And Sister Jean got a bobblehead, her own signature shoes, became friends with Charles Barkley and got recruited by the Atlanta Falcons before throwing out the first pitch at Wrigley Field.

Nobody had a better 2018 than Sister Jean.

8. March 17, Second Round: Loyola (Chicago) 63, Tennessee 62

This game is important for a lot of reasons. One, it unlocked a Final Four run on par with those by George Mason, VCU and Butler in recent memory. Two, it was a great game, decided in the final second. Third, and most importantly, it made Sister Jean an international celebrity.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 12/27/2018

The Morning Dish – Thursday, December 27, 2018--Hoops HD
Missouri Valley: Drake and Indiana State not only have the best records, but they also have the best NET rankings and each finished well in a tournament as Drake won the Las Vegas Classic and Indiana State was runner-up in the Diamond Head Classic. Don’t sleep on Loyola, who may be turning a corner after starting slower than expected, or Southern Illinois, who is well-tested.
KenPom: The most likely contenders in all 32 conference races--The Athletic
MVC: Loyola-Chicago*, 57 percent; Southern Illinois, 20; Indiana State, 18; Drake, 16

Expectations are a cruel thing. Sure, Loyola isn’t playing like a Final Four team but it was always wishful thinking that the Ramblers would duplicate their magic from last March. They lost three players from last season’s seven-man rotation, and a fourth, Lucas Williamson, has played just seven games due to a broken hand. The fact that they’re still the pick to win their league says something about the program, even if an at-large bid has become unattainable.

3. Illinois State’s Madison Williams deserves to get a tech for this dunk

Court Report: From Sister Jean to UMBC to federal convictions, it's the college hoops 2018 year in review--CBS Sports
March 15: A Donte Ingram straightaway 3-pointer, feet flicked to the right -- just from the edge of the MARCH MADNESS logo, oh the poesy -- sets off an all-time story. Loyola-Chicago wins 64-62 over Miami in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

...
March 17: A legend starts to grow, but had Jordan Bone's 3 gone in for Tennessee in the second round, Loyola-Chicago doesn't become Loyola-Chicago. It didn't fall, though. Instead, Clayton Custer's winner a few seconds before was the jumping-off point for the Ramblers, who would beat Nevada in the Sweet 16 and Kansas State in the Elite Eight and conclude their run in the Final Four. Amid all of this, a 98-year-old nun would become one of the biggest sports-story sensations in America.

Matt Norlander S. Illinois

Jerry Palm Loyola-Chi.

The Valley has been struggling this season, headlined by Loyola-Chicago's inability to grip the momentum off last season's Final Four. The Ramblers are 7-6 but still rate in most metrics as the best team in the conference. The competition? Southern Illinois, which is the most experienced team in the league. Indiana State and potentially even Drake, which boasts the best record of any Valley team through the first eight weeks of the season, are also hovering. Talented Illinois State could be the sleeper pick, if it can find consistency. -- MN

What did YOU get for Christmas?--Off Tackle Empire
I’ve realized, over the last couple years, that I pay extra attention to a few teams in college football and basketball, for no other reason than they do something amusing or play a style that I find endearing. So, on this Christmas, I’m going to list them:
...
Drake Bulldogs: Look, we all hate Iowa. Agreed? Well, if you ever find yourself needing to tolerate basketball in the state of Iowa without rooting for the Hawkeyes or Cyclones, might I recommend Drake? Tickets are $10, you can sit anywhere, and they sell beer in the stadium. I watched their win over Rider last week, and since then they’ve run off three more wins and a title in Las Vegas.
Sam Cunliffe is biding his time, waiting to shine on the court for Evansville--Evansville Courier Press
The Morning Dish – Tuesday, December 25, 2018--Hoops HD
Today’s Menu:

The highlight of Christmas Day this year is the title game of the Diamond Head Classic. Indiana State takes on TCU (9 p.m. Eastern, ESPN2). Among the number of lousy traits of today’s current NCAA exempt tournament format is that it results in frequent double-dipping with teams playing within a tournament but also outside it as well. The Horned Frogs just dumped the Sycamores by 20 only nine days ago in Fort Worth. In ISU’s defense, it had just gotten transfers Christian Williams and Cooper Neese eligible before that contest, and both are acclimating themselves to the team. An excellent three-point shooting team this season (45.5%), Indiana State also made just 3 of 16 triples in that first matchup; if the Sycamores can shoot closer to their norm, maybe they can hang with a TCU team that is hitting its stride since Jaylen Fisher came back.
The 6 most intriguing college basketball games left in 2018--The Comeback

TCU (10-1) vs. Indiana State (8-3) – December 25

We’re not even in 2019 yet and we’ve already got a rematch on our hands. The TCU Horned Frogs defeated the Indiana State Sycamores 90-70 on December 16. Less than two weeks later, the two squads are meeting again in the championship game of the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu. While the first meeting was a blowout, there’s a reason to believe the second game won’t follow suit. This time they’ll be squaring off on a neutral court and the Sycamores, one of the best three-point shooting teams in the nation, racked up the points in their early tournament wins over Colorado and UNLV. This’ll be a good barometer for both teams as they prepare for conference play.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 22nd--Hoops HD
HIGHLIGHTED GAMES
...
-INDIANA STATE VS COLORADO (Diamond Head Classic). Colorado is a very quiet 8-1 on the year, and if they could win this tournament they’d be one of the few bright spots in the Pac Twelve that has been rather lousy overall. They face a pretty good Indiana State team today that they should beat, but that they won’t beat if they overlook them.
...
-NEW MEXICO STATE VS DRAKE (Las Vegas Classic). Both teams have impressive records with just two losses, and New Mexico State has proven that they are a strong team. Doing well in this tournament should help to continue to grow their resumes.
Saturday Notes – December 22, 2018--Hoops HD
Indiana State 72, Colorado 67: The Buffaloes couldn’t pull one out like the Wildcats did, though, so the conference takes another hit in a Diamond Head Classic quarterfinal.
...
Drake 66, New Mexico State 63: Drake is quietly 9-2 after this win, and it’s a quality win at that. They also handed Texas State their only loss prior to Saturday (the Bobcats lost a close one at Arkansas).
The Morning Dish – Sunday, December 23, 2018--Hoops HD
Today’s Menu: It’s a light one two days before Christmas with just 10 games, four of them at the Diamond Head Classic.

The semifinals in Hawaii have Indiana State against UNLV (4:30 p.m. Eastern, ESPN2) and Bucknell facing TCU (10 p.m., ESPN2). The Horned Frogs are certainly heavy favorites to win this event now, though Indiana State’s three-point shooting and Bucknell’s experience and comfort playing top competition could pose a few problems. Consolation bracket games are Colorado against host Hawaii (7 p.m., ESPNU) and later Rhode Island against UNC Charlotte (12:30 a.m., ESPNU).
The Continental Tire Classic Las Vegas Classic finishes with upstart Drake against San Diego in the title game (7:30 p.m., FS1). The consolation game follows that as New Mexico State takes on Washington State (10 p.m., FS1).

NEWS AND NOTES
...
-This is mentioned below, but Colorado looked to be a quiet dark horse riding to the rescue of what is a mostly pitiful Pac Twelve. The Diamond Head Classic was set up to give them 3 wins away from home and put them at a rather impressive 11-1. Well, they lost to Indiana State yesterday.
...
HIGHLIGHTED GAMES
...
-INDIANA STATE VS UNLV (Diamond Head Classic). Indiana State doesn’t have much a profile, but they don’t have anything that’s really awful on their resume either and they just picked up a pretty good win against Colorado. If they can win this tournament and knock off a team like TCU in the process, then they may be better set up for an at-large bid than anyone else in the Missouri Valley.
...
-SAN DIEGO VS DRAKE (Las Vegas Classic). An interesting game between two teams with good records, but not a whole lot of good wins (at least by the standards of the selection committee). This game is a chance for one of these teams to pick up a decent win against a decent team away from home.

BEST OF THE REST

For the most part, taking over a new job is never going to be an easy endeavor. There’s usually a reason the jobs open up in the first place, and it’s not normally because the coach that was there the previous season was hired by a bigger school.

Here are four names off the beaten path that are excelling in their first year at a new program.

DARIAN DEVRIES, Drake: Devries walked into a pretty good situation. He took over for Niko Medved, a notorious program builder that was in charge for just one year before taking Colorado State, and has thrived. Drake is 10-2 on the season after wins over a pair of good teams in New Mexico State and San Diego in the Las Vegas Classic. With the Missouri Valley wide open this season, the Bulldogs are a team to keep an eye on.

Loyola-Chicago/Sister Jean reach Final Four

Sister Jean and Loyola were the feel-good story of March Madnesss. USATSI

At 98 years old, Sister Jean became an international superstar during Loyola-Chicago's improbable run to the Final Four during the 2018 NCAA tournament. The sister served as team chaplain and garnered a staggering amount of love and admiration throughout the tournament, becoming the face of an underdog squad that became just the second Loyola team to make the Final Four in program history (the first since 1963).
