Mid-Major Madness Offseason Roundtable--Mid-Major Madness
What has been your favorite storyline to follow during the offseason?
...
Ellie Lieberman: I’m a sucker for summer league basketball because it’s the first time I get to see my favorite mid-major players face off against NBA level talent. Though many mid-major players’ career hopes may have been dashed after a few summer league games, it’s exciting to see players like Jacob Wiley (from EWU) or Alec Peters (Valpo) put on the jets for a few games in order to receive two-way contracts. It’s March Madness level desperation meets July.
...
Austin Brown: The Missouri Valley’s scramble for survival following Wichita State’s departure for the AAC. The MVC ultimately decided to add a team that spent the majority of the last four years riding the coattails of Alec Peters in Valparaiso. I think Valpo can compete with the rest of the MVC, but that isn’t saying much.

The biggest losers of this offseason? Every beat writer in the MVC. With Wichita out of the picture, here are the cities that currently comprise the MVC: Peoria, IL, Des Moines, IA, Evansville, IN, Normal, IL, Terra Haute, IN, Springfield, MO, Cedar Falls, IA, Carbondale, IL, Valparaiso, IN and Chicago, IL. Outside of Chicago, that is an absolutely excruciating gauntlet of towns to spend January-March bouncing between.

Top 10 Mid-Major Players at Each Position: Power Forward--CBB Central
Whenever you do a rankings list like this, you always find yourself surprised by some of the things you find out doing some deep digging. The biggest takeaway from my doing these rankings has been the incredible star power at the power forward position in mid-major basketball. I had an incredibly difficult time cutting this list to just 10, but I think I’ve found the ten best power forwards at the mid-major level.

#3. Alize Johnson (Missouri State)

Vitals: Senior, 6-9, 203 pounds
Stats: 14.8 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 1.9 apg, 38.8% 3-pt FG%

A year ago, Johnson had never played a minute of D1 basketball. Now, he is far and away the favorite for Missouri Valley Player of the Year and on NBA radars. The JUCO product Johnson has incredible athleticism and a diverse offensive skillset that makes him an incredibly intriguing “combo forward” prospect at the NBA level. He recently was a standout at the Adidas Nations event. For now though, he’s tasked with bringing Missouri State to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999.

Battle 4 Atlantis Schedule Announced--Hammer and Rails
This will be the first time Purdue has faced Tennessee since 2009, where they defeated the Volunteers 73-72 in the championship game of the Paradise Jam Tournament.

Based on the schedule, Purdue will then face the winner or loser of the Villanova/Western Kentucky game. If the Boilermakers face Villanova, it will be a rematch of their meeting last season, where Villanova won 79-76 in Mackey Arena. From there, Purdue will either face Arizona, NC State, Northern Iowa, or SMU.

Deontae Hawkins (Illinois State)

Hawkins is arguably the best player still available at this stage in the game. At 6-8, he can play both inside and out, averaging 14 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for a very good Illinois State team this past season. It has been reported that Hawkins plans to visit (if he hasn’t already) Gonzaga and New Mexico. At New Mexico, he’d immediately step into a starring role for a rebuilding Lobo squad. At Gonzaga, Hawkins would be looked to as the piece to push the Zags past St. Mary’s in the WCC, factoring into a frontcourt that already features Johnathan Williams, Killian Tillie, and others. Wherever he lands, Hawkins should make a big impact.
