Bracketology 2024: Who’s Locked Up A Bid? (As of 2/28/2024)--Blogging the Bracket

Elsewhere

The Sun Belt, through App State and James Madison, and Missouri Valley, via Indiana State and Drake, could potentially place two teams in the field, but it might take quite a few stumbles among the multi-bid league contenders for this to happen.

Wednesday Games

Old Dominion at App State, 6:30 p.m. (ESPN+ ($))
James Madison at Georgia State, 7 p.m. (ESPN+ ($))
Drake at UIC, 8 (ESPN+ ($))
Indiana State at Evansville, 8 (ESPN+ ($))

Of these four contenders, only the Mountaineers play at home in the midweek window, while the remaining three teams face trap road games.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 2/27/2024

Forde Minutes: Court Storms, Bubble Teams and Looming Selection Committee Questions--Sports Illustrated

Other looming committee questions

This is peak bubble season, but there is much more for the NCAA tournament selection committee to be watching and weighing. The Minutes poses some pressing questions:

How about the Missouri Valley (30)?

The Valley similarly has two standout teams in the Indiana State Sycamores and Drake Bulldogs (with a potential third spoiler in the Bradley Braves). The Sycamores (24–5, No. 34 in the NET) have become an off-radar cult favorite with their entertaining style of play, and it should be noted that starting forward Jayson Kent missed most of the two upset losses with a concussion. The Bulldogs (23–6, No. 45 in the NET) are on their way to a fourth straight 25-win season. The two teams split meetings this season and seem destined for a third during Arch Madness in St. Louis.

It might simply be too much to ask for the committee to award at-large bids to multiple mid-major conferences when there are so many ninth-place high-majors loitering out there with double-digit losses. If that’s the case, this could be a differentiator: The MVC is a top-10 league per KenPom, while the Sun Belt is No. 17.

Belmont gets tough, outlasts Missouri State--NashvilleHoops.blog
The week ahead: It’s all about seeding for Lipscomb, Belmont, TSU--NashvilleHoops.blog

Looking at the week ahead: Hope you’re prepared; the regular season is nearly over.

Belmont, Lipscomb and Tennessee State all just have two games left and what’s left to accomplish is getting the best seed possible for the conference tournaments.

Belmont appears to be heading for a fifth-place finish, which means the Bruins will be playing an extra game in the MVC Tournament. The top four teams get a bye into the quarterfinals.

Belmont (17-12, 10-8) trails Southern Illinois (19-10, 11-7) by a game for that final bye. The team’s split during the regular season.

Belmont finishes with a road game at Murray State (12-17, 9-9) Wednesday and a home game against Evansville (15-14, 6-12) Sunday. SIU goes to Bradley (20-9, 12-6) and hosts Northern Iowa (16-13, 10-8) in its final two games.

If the two teams are tied, the second tiebreaker is record against the first-place team, Indiana State. SIU split its two games with the Sycamores while Belmont was swept.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 2/22/2024

Why Belmont, Vanderbilt and MTSU lost Wednesday night--NashvilleHoops.blog

Malik Dia only played 16 minutes in Belmont’s loss to Drake. Photo by Landen Secrest.

Once again picking through box scores attempting to explain three defeats:

The most important statistic from Belmont’s 84-69 loss to Drake was 20. That’s the number of consecutive victories Drake has on its home court. It’s tied with Houston for the longest active streak in the country. An upset could only have been classified as major if it had happened.

There were other reasons for the defeat. Fouls limited Malik Dia to 16 minutes, Cade Tyson to 25 and Jayce Willingham to 16.  Plus, the Bruins uncharacteristically didn’t shoot well. Dia was 3 of 10, Tyson 3 of 8 and the team was 26 of 63 (41 percent). They only made 7 of 24 threes.

The Bruins, not a great rebounding team, had 13 offensive rebounds but were only able to parlay that into four points (see: Bad shooting).

Drake shot 30 for 58, but Belmont did a nice job on the Bulldogs’ star Tucker DeVries, making him earn his 21 points on 5-of-16 shooting. So, the rest of the Bulldogs were 25 for 42, 59 percent.
