What's Up In The Missouri Valley 1/31/2022

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Sunday, Jan 30--Hoops HD

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-LOYOLA CHICAGO AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley).  Drake has been somewhat of a disappointment this year, but they are still capable of playing really well, and considering that Loyola Chicago has had to sweat out a lot of their conference wins lately, an upset is not out of the question at all.

5. Loyola Chicago. The Ramblers lost the best player (Cameron Krutwig) and coach (Moser) from last year’s Sweet 16 squad, but they brought back three starters and have only lost four games. That includes a pair of close ones at the Battle 4 Atlantis against Michigan State and Auburn.

Mid-major Top 10

10. Loyola Chicago (15-4). The Ramblers lost at Drake on Sunday to drop into a tie for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference, but they are still No. 25 in the NET and don’t have any bad losses. LW: 4.

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Monday, Jan 31--Hoops HD

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Loyola Chicago continues to struggle, and while they’re at-large hopes are far from dead, they are also becoming far from a certainty.  I know Drake is good, and I know it’s not easy to win there, but that’s kind of the point.  Making the NCAA Tournament isn’t easy, and it requires that teams win games that aren’t easy to win.  Loyola Chicago has fewer chances to do that given the make up of their conference, so whenever they lose it’s more of a setback.  I don’t believe they are out of strikes yet, but they are getting there.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 1/29/2022

Weekend Bracket Watch: January 28th-30th--Inside College Hoops

1. Loyola-Chicago at Drake, Sunday, 2PM ET, ESPN2
If you were around for any of the 2020-21 Missouri Valley season, you’ll know that it doesn’t get much better than this. Loyola-Chicago and Drake had their wars last year, that ultimately tilted to the Ramblers when push came to shove in the Arch Madness Championship Game. However, Drake’s split with LUC during the regular season proved to be huge as Drake was then selected as an at-large team into the First Four of the NCAA Tournament. This season hasn’t been as rose-colored for Drake. They’ve had several games come down to the wire. Winning three of their four OT games and avoiding near-disaster with a one-point win at Evansville. At this point their may not be enough chances left for Drake to get an at-large, but a win on Sunday over recent rival Loyola would put the Bulldogs in a first place tie at 7-2. The Ramblers have had a real strange stretch of league play where they struggled mightily in four recent games vs. Bradley, Valpo, Missouri State, and SIU. Amazingly the Ramblers dug themselves out of a hole in three of these four games. Still, its not the dominant Loyola team we saw in many games last season that elevated all the way into Top 10 KenPom status. Should be an excellent, competitive battle in Des Moines and on ESPN 2 which is great for the league.

22. Drake Bulldogs (15-6)

Drake has won two in a row, but it sure has been a struggle. The Bulldogs had to toil through their third and fourth overtime games of the season to earn a 6-2 mark in the Valley — and they also won a pair of 60-59 games in regulation over Evansville and Southern Illinois — but who cares how they got there? Drake is No. 2 in the MVC and only a half-game back, thanks to Missouri State putting a dent in Loyola’s armor. That result set up the Bulldogs for a chance to take the top spot on Sunday, as they host the Ramblers in a massive mid-major showdown. Tank Hemphill’s return is a huge boost to Drake’s chances. -AD

19. Missouri State Bears (15-7)

Isiaih Mosley is an exceptional player. He has turned on the jets in recent weeks to emerge as one of the best scorers nationwide. The Bears are 4-2 during this stretch but Mosley is averaging 32.8 points (.595/.486/.891) and 6.8 rebounds per game over his last six contests. He makes Missouri State extremely dangerous when it comes to contending for the MVC title; the Bears have already proven capable of taking down Loyola Chicago. -LH

1. Loyola Chicago Ramblers (15-3)

It’s true, the Ramblers could not stop Isiaih Mosley last weekend — and because of it, they are no longer perfect in the Missouri Valley. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t the best team in mid-major basketball. One game does not make the team, and Loyola has already bounced back with a smothering 59-47 win over Southern Illinois. In that win, Drew Valentine’s defense held Marcus Domask (15.3 points per game) to just six points on 2-of-8 shooting and didn’t let SIU hit 40 as a team until 34 minutes into the game. Loyola appears to be just fine, but the true test comes on Sunday in Des Moines against Drake. -AD

The DPI Gradebook: Ochai Agbaji, David Roddy rising in college basketball player rankings--Heat Check CBB

Midwest Spotlight Game: Isiaih Mosley v. Loyola Chicago

Mosley’s 40-point eruption against Loyola Chicago was easily the top Gold Star performance of the week, resulting one of the highest Gold Star scores of the entire season at 56.67 points. It’s not as if this scoring outburst came out of nowhere — Mosley had 43 against Northern Iowa earlier in the month and has gone for 25-plus on 16 occasions in the past two seasons. Still, doing it in on the road in a 20-point upset of the nationally ranked league leader? Now that’s special. He is truly Mr. Automatic for the Bears, too. Mosley is one of just five players nationally shooting 40 percent on 3-pointers, 50 percent on mid-range shots, 60 percent at the rim and 70 percent from the stripe (min. 25 attempts in each).

Bubble Watch: Penny Hardaway, Memphis and the problem with running out of time early--The Athletic

Others

Otherwise, this remains a very robust Others section, with plenty of interesting teams out there in mid-major land – teams like Chattanooga (NET: 46), North Texas (57), and Missouri State (60) that look like quality outfits even if they don’t have at-large worthy resumes. It’s a really good year down here.

Should be in: BYU, Loyola Chicago, Colorado State

Loyola Chicago (14-3, 5-1; NET: 26, SOS: 121): Loyola is currently in the “just don’t lose too much in league play” portion of its season, one its players will be very familiar with by this point. Fortunately for Loyola, there is usually at least one other quality opponent in the Valley. This year, that opponent is Missouri State, which is 60th in the NET, 50th in KenPom, has lost to too many low-end teams, but which is a genuinely tough squad that just come up with a 10-point win at Gentile Arena thanks to a 40-point, 14-of-22 night from Isiaih Mosley. This is hardly a disaster. The disasters happen elsewhere in this league, and as long as the Ramblers avoid most of them, they’ll remain on the track for the tourney.
