What's Up In The Missouri Valley 1/31/2026

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Saturday, Jan 31st--Hoops HD

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-MURRAY STATE AT BELMONT (Missouri Valley). I highlight this game because I think Belmont should be right on the bubble (although the real committee may not feel that way), and if they can win out through the regular season they should be in the field. These are the two best teams in the MVC and the series actually dates back to when they were oftentimes the two best teams in the OVC. This really could be a game that impacts the bubble.

Week 13 Weekend Watchlist--Basket Under Review

Saturday, January 31

B Games

#91 Murray State at #67 Belmont (-6), 8 PM ET, CBSSN.

Classic rivalry game that has carried over to the MVC from the OVC, but the Bruins are 5-1 in the series since they both jumped leagues. Murray State’s defense disappeared for the first two games of their current 3 game losing streak, and then they couldn’t hit a jump shot in the most recent loss to Illinois State (I’m not sure how Ryan Miller can continue to give his nephew minutes if he’s not going to hit jump shots, as he’s also a defensive liability). Diametrically opposed offensive and defensive schemes here, as Belmont’s an elite off-ball screening team with outstanding spacing and catch and shoot production, but have struggled against drop coverages that can clog up the lane and switch off the ball like Murray State does (whether they do it well is the question). Murray State wants to funnel ball screen and dribble production, which Belmont simply doesn’t do (although Jack Smiley has provided some ball screen offense in Nic McClain’s stead). The Racers meanwhile are a spread PNR outfit with multiple ball screen creators (Roman Domon particularly being electric), but have shot just 18-80 from 3 in this 3 game tailspin. That has to change today against Belmont’s extreme overhelp, post doubles against Fred King, and total rim denial (1st percentile rim rate allowed, per Synergy data). - Jordan Majewski

Mid-Major Madness Men’s Player of the Week Voting: Jan. 19-25--Mid-Major Madness

Jalen Quinn - Drake

Drake has had its ups and downs in year one of the Eric Henderson tenure in Des Moines, Iowa, with an 11-10 record overall and just 5-5 in the Missouri Valley which is good for fifth-place. Still, Quinn, who arrived from Loyola Chicago via the transfer portal this past offseason, is proving to be a superstar as the league’s leading scorer averaging a career-high 18.5 PPG.

This past week, he led a pair of bounce back wins, starting with a 101-90 win over Murray State in which Quinn dropped a career-high 34 points, grabbed six rebounds and swiped three steals. He followed that up with 27 points, four rebounds and three more steals to help defeat Indiana State on the road. He went 25-for-24 from the field over the course of the week.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 1/28/2026

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Wednesday, Jan 28th--Hoops HD

OTHER NOTABLE GAMES:

-Belmont @ Valparaiso (Missouri Valley) – Belmont should win this game, but Valpo has proven to be a challenging place to win this year. I still think the committee will look at Belmont closely if they can win out

-Illinois State @ Murray State (Missouri Valley) – Illinois State is a tough team, but they’ve stumbled a few too many times. Murray State is trying to keep pace with Belmont in the MVC standings

1.28.26 Game Analysis--Basket Under Review

QUICK TAKES:

  • Murray State's defense has allowed 1.23 PPP over the past 2 games, as their drop coverage has been getting shellacked by primary ball screen operators. Illinois State doesn't really play out of the ball screen all that much in Pedon's offensive scheme...[Subscriber Content]

Teams of the Week: Illini Indulgence--Basket Under Review

DRAKE

Murray State has been all of the talk lately. So much so, that I am getting ready to board a plane to see the Racers host Illinois State on Wednesday! This Drake team did not care at all. Jalen Quinn and Owen Larson are forming quite a formidable tandem. Quinn dropped 34 on the Racers as MSU big man Fred King dealt with foul trouble. Drake put up 1.23 points per possession, perhaps a deeper concern for the Racer defense.

Drake got its perfect week secured by earning its second consecutive win on Saturday, Jan. 24, defeating Indiana State, 76-62, inside the Hulman Center. The Bulldogs were out to a fast start and grabbed an early 12-4 advantage at ISUblue with Owen Larson continuing his stellar play after tying a career-high 22 points against Murray State. The star sophomore connected on his first three shots of the game, which included a pair of 3-pointers to spark the Drake offense.

Drake HC Eric Henderson – “We’re making strides. This team has grown a lot. I’m just really proud of them and to be able to continue to bounce back. Today, we got off to such a great start and had a little bit of lag at the end of the half. We were really struggling scoring the basketball. It was kind of a clunky game there for a little while, but it got a little more fluid in the second half, and we put the pedal to the floor.”

Week 13 Watchlist: Stay Glued to Your TV Set--Basket Under Review

Wednesday, January 28

A Games

#87 Illinois State at #90 Murray State (-3), 9 PM ET, ESPN+. This is a potential MVC regular season title eliminator. Both of these teams are very likely to finish top-4 in the league, but Illinois State is down to just a 14% chance at a share of the MVC title after their loss to Belmont, and Murray's shock 0-2 week has dropped them down to 38%. It's now Belmont who's trying to run away with the league.

Illinois State getting off the ground and forcing Murray into a three-game tailspin requires the Redbirds to flex their muscles in their best attribute: defensive rebounding. This team is #8 in America in DREB%, which is highly, highly important against a Murray team that is 10-1 this year with the lone loss by five to UNI when they get a third or more of their missed shots back. If ISUred forces a lot of one-shot possessions, make or miss, it creates a game script that slants their way.

Week Twelve Award Winners--Valley Hoops Insider

Drake’s Quinn is Exploding

(St. Louis, MO) – Heading into the conference season’s second half, Drake’s Jalen Quinn is exploding. He and the other week twelve award winners are making their marks in both the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences. Newcomer award winners are helping their teams jump up in their respective conference standings.

Week Twelve Players of the Week

Quinn’s week sparked the Bulldogs to a pair of victories. The 6’3 guard scored 34 and 27 points and this week’s ‘Player of the Week‘ has averaged 27.5 points per game over Drake’s last four games. He’s the Valley’s second leading scorer during conference play.

Newcomers Catapulting Their Teams

Illinois Chicago’s Elijah Crawford has sparked life into the Flames’ season. Since returning from injury seven games ago, UIC has won its last six games. The Valley’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘ scored 26 points during a win against Bradley and averaged 21 points during the Flames’ two games.

Week Twelve Freshmen

Belmont’s Eoin Dillon’s recent emergence has added another layer to the Bruin offensive attack. During the Bruins’ only game, the Valley’s ‘Freshman of the Week‘ scored 16 points  for his fourth straight double digit scoring performance. Belmont is now tied with Murray State for first place in the Valley race.
