2. Belmont

There isn’t a team in the city with as much star power as Casey Alexander’s team has.

Belmont’s big three of Malik Dia, Cade Tyson and Ja’Kobi Gillespie are all averaging north of 16 points per game.

The Bruins have an excellent win over Drake on their rèsumè that provides some evidence to the assertion that Belmont should be considered a legitimate contender in the MVC. Saturday’s 30-point loss at Indiana State was a step back in that department, though.

It was also a step back on the defensive end, where Belmont had previously led the MVC in defensive efficiency throughout the first few weeks of conference play.

If Belmont can get Gillespie back, get enough contributions from its depth pieces and can defend closer to the level that it did in the first five games of league play than it did in Terre Haute then it has a chance to be a real dark horse for the MVC autobid.

For now, Drake and Indiana State are the league favorites while Southern Illinois and Belmont loom as dark-horse candidates.
