It will be a week of long bus rides for Belmont, Lipscomb and
Tennessee State as all three teams head out on the road. As we all know,
it doesn’t always end well out there. The road is a dangerous place.
— Belmont hasn’t played since beating Arkansas State Dec. 20 and will
be in Carbondale, Ill. to play Southern Illinois Tuesday night.
Belmont is 9-4 overall but the Bruins are 3-3 in road games and the
three losses were not competitive. They lost to Furman (99-76), Arizona
(100-68) and Samford (99-93). Their victories were over Middle
Tennessee, Northern Iowa and Penn.
The Bruins were 7-7 in road games last season, 5-5 in MVC, their
first season in the conference, but their visit to Carbondale was
unpleasant, a 63-45 loss. This season, SIU is 9-4 overall and 8-1 at
home. The Salukis are led by guard Xavier Johnson, who is one of the
leading scorers in the country at 24.6 ppg.
The Bruins’ following game is back home Sunday but the opposition
will be Drake, the preseason pick to win the MVC. The Bulldogs are 11-2
and are led by 6-7 junior forward Tucker DeVries, who averages 19.0 ppg,
6.7 rpg, 3.4 apg and even leads the team in steals. He has a possible
future in the NBA. Nashvillehoops.blog will let you know how many NBA
scouts are at the Curb Center.
