What's Up In The Missouri Valley 12/22/2020

News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Friday, Dec 19th--Hoops HD

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-DRAKE AT SOUTH DAKOTA.  Drake looking to remain unbeaten.

-RICHMOND AT LOYOLA CHICAGO.  Loyola Chicago is coming off a very impressive showing against Wisconsin and will most likely be a front runner in the Missouri Valley and even push for a spot inside the bubble.  A win today against a Richmond team that’s a probable NCAA Tournament team would certainly help.

The Other Top 25: Saint Mary’s and Winthrop continue their climb--Mid-Major Madness

RankSchoolRecordChangeOur reasoning
11 Loyola University Chicago 3-2 -5 Loyola took a big hit due to a brutal set of games against Wisconsin and Richmond last week. With UNI's injury issues, the Ramblers are still the prohibitive favorite to win the Missouri Valley. Also, our Large Rowdy Son Cameron Krutwig ranks 6th in KenPom's POY standings.

Also receiving votes: Drake, New Mexico State, Chattanooga, Pepperdine, Georgia State, UAB, UNC Greensboro, Davidson, Wright State, Southern Illinois, UC Santa Barbara

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES

-BELMONT AT EVANSVILLE.  Belmont continues to fly way under the national radar, but a win tonight will get them to 8-1 on the season and give them their third true road win.

-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS AT BUTLER.  Butler has looked good at the times they’ve been on the court, but they are just 1-2 coming into this game and are in a bit of an urgent situation here.  Southern Illinois is unbeaten, but hasn’t lifted any really heavy weight yet so this is an opportunity for them to pick up a big win as well.

Opportunity knocks

Southern Illinois at Butler, 7:30 p.m. ET Monday, FS1. We haven’t talked much this year about the Salukis, but Bryan Mullins is building something in Carbondale and has his team at 5-0. The best win has been over Murray State, so this would be a nice one to get, even over a rebuilding Butler squad.

Bradley at Missouri, 7 p.m. Tuesday, SEC Network. Speaking of Valley teams that have been a bit under the radar, Bradley is the two-time reigning conference tournament champ. With Northern Iowa’s problems, the league title looks more up for grabs than it did a month ago. The Braves are 6-2 and lost by a point on the road to Xavier. Here’s a chance to get noticed against Missouri, which has far exceeded expectations to this point.

The Mid-Major Top 10

9. Loyola Chicago (3-2): The Ramblers lost twice last week, but it’s hard to ding them too much for either one. They fell at Wisconsin, 77-63, in a game that had been arranged just a few days earlier. Though it was not all that close after halftime, did you see what the Badgers did to a (shorthanded) Louisville on Saturday? The one-possession loss to Richmond was also understandable. It was fun watching Cameron Krutwig go up against Grant Golden, as the two burly, pass-first centers basically embodied the Spiderman pointing at himself meme. LW: 5

NEWS AND NOTES

-Richmond jumped out to a huge lead against Loyola Chicago, and then did something that they almost never do, and that’s give up the lead.  Loyola fought back and was in a position to win the game in the final minute, but just couldn’t get all the way over the hump.  Richmond improves to 6-1 and gets a nice bounce back road win after falling so hard to West Virginia.
