What's Up In The Missouri Valley 12/26/2017

The Morning Dish – Friday, December 22, 2017--Hoopville
Today’s Menu: It’s a very busy Friday before Christmas
...
Xavier is a team depleted by injury, providing Northern Iowa with even more of a golden opportunity hosting the Musketeers. (9 p.m., CBSSN)
...
A good one between top squads in the Southland and Big West has Lamar and Colton Weisbrod facing UC Davis and Chima Moneke in an undercard game at the Las Vegas Classic. The main semifinals has San Francisco vs. Duquesne and Southern Illinois against Nevada, with the Wolf Pack’s Jordan Caroline playing against his former team (11 p.m., FS1).
The Steve Pikiell Bowl has the current Rutgers coach hosting his former Stony Brook team.
Defense-minded, balanced Bradley tries to duplicate the feat accomplished by rival Illinois State less than a week ago: defeating Mississippi on the road.
...
Missouri Valley Conference play starts with maybe one of the biggest of all conference games this season as Loyola (Ill.) is at Missouri State. (8 p.m., MVC-TV, including Fox Sports-Midwest if you have satellite)
The Morning Dish – Saturday, December 23, 2017--Hoopville
Side Dishes
...
Another good one was in Cedar Falls, where Xavier and Northern Iowa were tied at the half. The Musketeers trailed by ten in the first half, so they already had to rally, and still had plenty left in the tank to score a 77-67 win over the Panthers.

Tonight’s Menu

We have one more busy day before Christmas, as things are about to slow down for a few days.
...
Evansville hosts Illinois State in an early Missouri Valley game (2 p.m.)
...
The Continental Tires Las Vegas Classic has four games on tap at Orleans Arena, starting with North Carolina A&T taking on Lamar (3 p.m.), followed by Radford battling UC Davis (5:30 p.m.), Southern Illinois taking on Duquesne (8:30 p.m.) and finishing with San Francisco against Nevada (11 p.m.)
The Morning Dish – Sunday, December 24, 2017--Hoopville
Side Dishes:
...
A stunner at the Las Vegas Classic, where San Francisco got a three-pointer by Jordan Ratinho with six seconds left and held on to top Nevada 66-64. What a gritty effort rewarded with a win for the Dons, a team we pegged as one to watch before the season that has had some struggles but earned this one with toughness and some big shotmaking. In the other game, Southern Illinois topped Duquesne 74-64, the Salukis committing just four turnovers and led by Sean Lloyd with 19 points.
...
Illinois State won at Evansville 72-66 in both teams’ Missouri Valley openers, with Milik Yarbrough filling it up with 28 and Keyshawn Evans scoring the game’s final seven points, including a pair of huge three-pointers in the final minutes. The Purple Aces were playing for the first time since their massive loss at Duke and got high-scoring Ryan Taylor back, and he scored 22 in his return from a foot injury.
Ten Questions to Consider: Christmas Weekend--Rush The Court
2. Will the third time be the charm for Northern Iowa? Northern Iowa and Xavier met twice in a span of six days last season with the Musketeers handily winning both games. Xavier held Northern Iowa to 32.7 percent shooting on two-point attempts while forcing the Panthers’ third- and fourth-worst turnover rates last season. The one thing going for Northern Iowa? Xavier has only played one true road game so far this season (a win at Wisconsin).
...
9. Will Missouri State protect its home court against Loyola-Chicago? Missouri State, the Missouri Valley Conference’s preseason favorite, begins conference play against a Loyola-Chicago team that beat Florida earlier this season. The Bears have arguably the conference’s toughest conference schedule to begin conference play, with Loyola followed by games against Valparaiso, Northern Iowa and Illinois State. Missouri State’s defense will be tested as Loyola-Chicago is ranked among the nation’s top five in three-point percentage.
News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Friday, Dec 22nd--Hoops HD
HIGHLIGHTED GAMES
...
-XAVIER AT NORTHERN IOWA. This is a great game. For Xavier it’s a chance to pick up their second true road win, and it won’t be easy. Northern Iowa has yet to lose at home, and if they win this they may not lose at home all year. UNI is coming off a rough loss to Iowa State, but they still have a solid profile and if they’re able to win this one it would solidify it even more. Our John Stalica will be there in person for what is probably the game of the day.
...
-LOYOLA CHICAGO AT MISSOURI STATE (Missouri Valley). Conference play gets underway in the MVC! I get the feeling that the teams at the top of this league will be inside the bubble, and both of these teams are positioned to end up there.
...
-SOUTHERN ILLINOIS VS NEVADA (Las Vegas Classic). This is a decent Southern Illinois team taking on a really good Nevada team. The Wolfpack can improve to 11-2 on the year and pick up another win away from home.
News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Dec 23rd thru Tuesday, Dec 26th. MERRY HOLIDAYS!!--Hoops HD
HIGHLIGHTED GAMES, Saturday, Dec 23rd
...
-ILLINOIS STATE AT EVANSVILLE (Missouri Valley). Evansville was just blasted at Duke, but they weren’t at full strength and they’re still in relatively decent shape if they can finish at or near the top of the MVC. Winning today is pretty much a must.

No. 9 XAVIER (-5) at NORTHERN IOWA, Fri. 9:00 p.m.: This depends somewhat on who is healthy for Xavier, but regardless, I do think UNI and their defense can keep this thing close and low-scoring. I like Xavier, but the best bet in this game? The under.
