Explosive Performances

(St. Louis, MO) – Preseason all-conference picks highlight the Ohio Valley and Missouri Valley Conference weekly women’s awards. Explosive performances were in abundance in both conferences and both leagues battled numerous ‘power conference’ teams.

OVC squads won ten of 22 opening week games, with four losses coming on the home courts of money conference powers. MVC teams were 10-9 during the opening week with four defeats coming on power conference courts.

Illinois State landed the league’s best win so far with a victory at Northwestern.

Players of the Week

Drake’s Anna Miller posted two, double-doubles and averaged 22.5 points, twelve rebounds and 4.5 blocks during the Bulldogs’ two wins. The Valley’s ‘Player of the Week’ has now become Drake’s career leader in blocked shots with 219.

Newcomers of the Week

During the Illinois State win at Northwestern Addison Martin recorded a double-double. It was the Redbirds’ only game of the opening week and Martin scored twelve points and grabbed eleven rebounds. The Abilene Christian transfer is the Valley’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’.
Freshmen Women’s Honors

Evansville rookie Camryn Runner scored 18 points in her collegiate debut and followed that up with a 17-point performance. The Purple Aces split their opening two games and Runner is the MVC’s ‘Freshman of the Week’.

-The Battle of the Boulevard never disappoints!!! Last night was another thrilling, close, and back and forth game with Belmont grabbing the lead in the final seconds, Lipscomb having one last possession, but then failing to get a shot off. Belmont got the dramatic 80-79 win. This is one of our favorite rivalries, so we always mention it.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-NORTHERN IOWA AT WICHITA STATE. These two are old MVC rivals and I believe it’s the first time they’ve met since Wichita State left to become members of the American. The Shockers are off to a 2-0 start with one of those wins being at Western Kentucky so they have shown a fair amount of promise. Northern Iowa is a team I was big on coming into the season, but they were just dominated by UC Irvine in their last game and need to bounce back.
