Arch Madness puts on a show

Indiana State-Drake Round III was an instant classic in the Missouri Valley championship game. The Bulldogs prevailed 84-80 over the Sycamores.

Drake went on to claim a 10-seed in the NCAA Tournament, where it fell to Washington State. Darian and Tucker DeVries left for West Virginia. Indiana State fell on the wrong side of the bubble and went to the NIT, where the Sycamores ran all the way to the title game. Josh Schertz, Robbie Avila and Isaiah Swope all moved over to Saint Louis in the offseason.

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Drake rolled past Belmont 65-46. It was never even a game. It may not be their most impressive win of the season on paper, but Belmont is still a pretty good team and for Drake to beat them that handily is certainly a statement. They remain unbeaten, and I guess we’ll have to wait until this afternoon to see if this was enough to put them in the top 25.

Drake makes its debut on my ballot

Drake is another team that the metrics don’t love — No. 68 at KenPom, No. 61 at Torvik and No. 67 at EvanMiya — but some preseason bias is still weighing those rankings down. (Drake started at 133 at KenPom.) Drake also plays low-possession games and often does just enough to win. But the resume is impressive, especially for a mid-major team. The Bulldogs have three wins over high-majors (Miami, Vanderbilt and Kansas State) and are one of four remaining unbeaten teams in Division I.

This is one of the best stories in the sport. Ben McCollum won four national championships at Northwest Missouri State and is one of the most-respected coaches in the sport, and once he finally got his Division I shot, he brought four of his D-II players with him as starters. They play great defense, are extremely patient offensively and rarely make mistakes. It’s a team that you appreciate more the more you watch, and Sunday’s 65-46 win over a solid Belmont team was another clinic. I was with Drake behind the scenes a few weeks ago against Kansas State and will have something coming on this group soon.

NCAA Basketball: Picks for Day 52 of 2024-25 season featuring Drake and Belmont--Busting Brackets
Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Sunday, Dec 29th--Hoops HD

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-INDIANA STATE AT OHIO STATE. It’s a buy game, but it’s interesting enough to go ahead and highlight. After a very slow start and a lot of roster turnover, Indiana State is starting to hit their stride with five straight wins. This is a much bigger test than any of the previous five games, though, as Ohio State is coming off a very impressive win against Kentucky, which ranks up there as one of the more impressive single game performances any team has this season.

-BELMONT AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley). Belmont is good, but Drake has just been fantastic this year and are one of the few remaining unbeaten teams. They are inching closer and closer to the top 25 and may be just a week or two away from breaking into it if they can keep winning. They will be tested today, but it’s still a game they should be able to win.

12/29/24 SUNDAY NOTES--Staring at the Floorboards

Subscriber Content

  • I have a couple of competing thoughts on Belmont visiting Drake....
  • Illinois State is quietly one of the more deadly drive and kick (96th percentile rate and 98th percentile efficiency per hoop-explorer) and post reliant offenses in the country....UIC isn’t a particularly strong defensive team, and their best perimeter defender Mason didn’t play against Seattle with an unknown injury...
  • Fascinating how bad Evansville was in two games without Pozzato, as he’s analytically a massive net negative on both ends of the floor for the Aces...The Aces have been way more competent shooting the ball at home, but they could get murdered on shot volume by Missouri State in their Valley home opener...
  • Northern Iowa has been absolutely trucking everyone at home this year...Schematically this is a tough one for SIU on both ends....

It’s the day after Christmas, and we start off in the Missouri Valley and focus on a Drake team that is one of the few remaining unbeatens and is inching closer and closer to the top 25. Bradley is another team to keep an eye on in league, and several other teams are on current winning streaks.

NCAA Basketball: Predicting when the final 4 unbeaten teams lose in 2024-25 season--Busting Brackets

Drake Bulldogs (11-0) - Jan 8th at Bradley

Drake is the team to beat in the Missouri Valley, but their biggest threat is likely Bradley (10-2), who is led by four seniors, averaging double figures. They have a recent home win over a good San Francisco squad and have the defense to give the Bulldogs fits.

Weekend Bracket Impact Games: Gonzaga looks to stay in No. 1 seed discussion--Bracketville

Bracket Impact Games – December 28 and 29:

Sunday, Dec. 29 Bracket Impact
Belmont at Drake Unbeaten Drake is an at-large contender heading into Missouri Valley play – having victories over Vanderbilt, Florida Atlantic, Kansas State and Miami. Obviously, K-State and Miami have underperformed expectations, so that hurts. Losing a home game here would dampen the Bulldogs’ at-large hopes down the road.
