HOOPING IT UP

Two MVC women’s teams scored Power 5 wins in the season’s first week. Drake toppled Big 12 power Iowa State on Sunday 85-73 in Des Moines behind 22 points from MVC Player of the Week Grace Berg. The Bulldogs take their shot at Caitlin Clark and No. 2 Iowa this Sunday in Iowa City.

Belmont, which was supposed to drop off after losing its top two players from last year to TV league programs via the transfer portal, instead showed it might not. The Bruins boatraced Georgia 76-50 in Nashville behind nine 3-pointers and 28 points from Kendal Cheesman.

Northern Iowa took its crack at Clark in Cedar Falls Sunday before a sellout crowd of 6,790 at McLeod Center. That didn’t go well for the Panthers, which fell 94-53 as Clark dropped a 24-point, 11-assist, 10-rebound triple-double. UNI made just 25% of its field goal tries, including 2-of-19 from 3-point land.
