The Big Ten/ACC Challenge has bigger matchups in store as part of a busier overall slate on the night.
  • Omaha travels to Arkansas State for a matchup of mid-majors off to a good start, while Murray State’s trip to Missouri State should be a good one as well (8 p.m.)
  • A good one to watch is Bradley hitting the road to visit Memphis (9 p.m.)
  • Southland favorite New Orleans makes the trip to Baton Rouge to play at LSU, while TCU should get a good test from visiting Illinois State (9 p.m.)

MVC/OVC Players of the Week--Valley Hoops Insider

Missouri Valley Conference

Javon Freeman-Liberty is making a name for himself. After a season of confusion around the league about his name, the confusion is all gone now. Freeman-Liberty scored 32 points against Cincinnati and is this week’s MVC ‘Player of the Week‘. The 6’3 sophomore nearly left Valparaiso in the offseason, but has returned and is in contention for the ‘Player of the Year’ award. He was named to the Paradise Jam all-tournament team and is the only Valley player to have two games of 30 or more points.
Southern Illinois freshman Marcus Domask is one of four first-year players nationally to average 14 points, four rebounds and three assists per game. This past week, the 6’5 Wisconsin native averaged 19.5 points as the Salukis split two games. He is this week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week‘.

College basketball mid-major power rankings – Top 25: Dayton flying to the top--Fansided
8. Northern Iowa (7-1): An early favorite has risen in the Valley. After a rare losing season last year, coach Ben Jacobson is back to looking like college basketball’s Gregg Popovich, and the Panthers his San Antonio Spurs. They play slow, smart, unselfish, defensive-minded basketball, a formula which has worked against Old Dominion and South Carolina this season, even slowing down Press Virginia in the team’s only blemish this season, a five-point loss in Cancun this week. In that game, reigning Missouri Valley freshman of the year A.J. Green put up 26 points, including the last 10. When things get tight, Green is the go-to guy.

14 Northern Iowa 7-1 4 Speaking of conference favorites, Northern Iowa is the team to beat in the Valley with Missouri State underperforming. The Panthers' most recent victim was South Carolina, behind 26 points from AJ Green. 12/2 vs. Luther

KenPom: Grading the new coaches on their promises to play up-tempo--The Athletic

Failed

Bryan Mullins, Southern Illinois. “I believe in playing with pace.” (Offensive pace rank: 341st) As was the case with Stackhouse and Ferrell, the world had little to go on with respect to Mullins’ up-tempo wishes. Given there have been just 12 teams to play at a slower pace than Southern Illinois, I think we know that Mullins really meant that he believes in playing with pace within the context of very long possessions.
