Side Dishes:

The CollegeInsider.com Tournament wasted no time after Selection Sunday getting going on its event. The first game was early in the day with Central Michigan winning at IPFW 94-89. Also winning was Drake (80-73 in overtime over Abilene Christian in the Wildcats’ first NCAA Division I postseason trip), Liberty-a 65-52 winner over North Carolina A&T-and San Diego, which capped the night with a freewheeling 88-72 win over Hartford, which traveled all the way across the country to play in just its second-ever Division I postseason game.

-ABILENE CHRISTIAN AT DRAKE (Lou Henson Classic, 2 PM CBSSN). We have a rare oddity in that a team that didn’t even qualify for the Southland Tournament (Abilene Christian) was still invited to a postseason tournament. Their opponent will be a Drake team that started hot in the Missouri Valley this year before fading off in the second half of conference play.

Women's Basketball 2018 NCAA Tournament Spokane Region Round of 64 Game Breakdowns--College Sports Madness
#4 Texas A&M vs. #13 Drake
The Aggies did enough in SEC play to lock down the opportunity to host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Texas A&M is 15-3 at home this season and they have upset teams like Tennessee. Guard play is going to be the difference for the Aggies as Chennedy Carter and Danni Williams are outstanding. Drake won the Missouri Valley Conference with an 18-0 record and have won 26 games this season. Becca Hittner leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 15.6 points per game. Texas A&M should be able to wear down Drake over the course of four quarters and get a solid 8 to 10-point win.

Best first round matchups:
...
Miami (Fla.)-Loyola Chicago: Two excellent defensive teams, and this is a doable game for the Ramblers.
2018 NCAA Tournament: Eight must-see first round matchups--College Basketball Talk
No. 6 Miami vs. No. 11 Loyola-Chicago (South Region, Thursday)

The Hurricanes took a hit personnel-wise when Jim Larranaga announced that Bruce Brown won’t be available due to the foot injury he suffered in late January. Miami did end the regular season well, winning its final four games, but to not have the sophomore guard on the court could prove costly against a balanced Loyola-Chicago attack that is also good defensively.

Experienced guards Clayton Custer, Donte Ingram and Marques Townes lead the way for the Ramblers, and when you add in Missouri Valley Defensive Player of the Year Ben Richardson, Porter Moser’s got the pieces needed to match up with Miami’s talented perimeter attack. The key for Miami could be the play of senior JaQuan Newton, who struggled a bit in the games immediately following his move to the bench but has since improved his play. If you like guard play (Miami’s Chris Lykes is incredibly fun to watch), this is a game you need to watch.
March Madness 2018: South Region stats, upsets, sleepers that will decide the bracket--The Sporting News
The first-round upset alert

No. 11 Loyola-Chicago over No. 6 Miami (Fla.): The Ramblers are making their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1985, and they could pull a surprise in the first round over the Miami Hurricanes of the ACC. Loyola is balanced — five players score in double figures, led by junior guard Clayton Custer (13.4 ppg). They're also experienced, with four upperclassmen among that quintet of players that rank No. 41 on KenPom. As for Miami, since opening the season 12-1, the Canes have gone 10-8, and looked flat in their last game, a 82-65 loss to North Carolina in the ACC Tournament.
March Madness: 68 reasons to love and obsess over the 2018 NCAA Tournament field--CBS Sports
2. I'm interested to see if we'll get a new champion this season. Sixteen of the 68 schools in the field have won a national title: Arizona, Arkansas, Cincinnati, Duke, Florida, Kansas, Kentucky, Loyola Chicago, Michigan, Michigan State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Syracuse, UCLA and Villanova. That means three of the eight top teams (Virginia, Xavier, Purdue) have a good shot at joining the club. Virginia and Xavier have never made a title game; Purdue's only trip came in 1969.
...
17. Allow me to Curb Your Enthusiasm myself by adding ... having said that, there are a few teams who seem a line off. Penn should be a 15, not a 16. (Swap with Lipscomb). WVU probably a 4, not a 5 (swap with Wichita State). And, for me, a 15-loss team should never be in the single digits, so I'd move Alabama from the 9 line down to a 10 and scoot Loyola up from an 11.
...
31. Two upset picks I'm way too confident in: No. 12 New Mexico State over No. 5 Clemson, No. 11 Loyola over No. 6 Miami. Lotta people piling on that Ramblers wagon already.
...
41. Best to worst No. 11 seeds: St. Bonaventure, Loyola, UCLA, Arizona State, Syracuse, San Diego State.
...
60. Also ending long droughts: Loyola (1985), Marshall (1985), Charleston (1999).
...
62. Coaches in the field who could be pulled to bigger jobs in a matter of weeks: Rhode Island's Dan Hurley, Charleston's Earl Grant, Buffalo's Nate Oats, UMBC's Ryan Odom, Loyola's Porter Moser, Georgia State's Ron Hunter, UNC Greensboro's Wes Miller.
...
65. Always love examining the tip time windows and ranking them accordingly. Here's your viewer's guide and priority list. I'd rank them like this, with the qualifier that these are really balanced blocks this year.

1. Thursday late afternoon: Duke-Iona, Miami-Loyola, Ohio State-South Dakota State, Seton Hall-NC State
2018 March Madness picks: Four Cinderellas you should strongly consider--CBS Sports
SOUTH
No. 11 Loyola Chicago Ramblers

First up: No. 6 Miami. Then possibly: No. 3 Tennessee.

This is a case of a really strong team being put on a double digit line. The Ramblers were rightfully treated well by the committee. With a 28-5 record, including a win at Florida, Porter Moser's team plays slow and has solid size. It also shoots well from 3. Miami is shorthanded without its best player, Bruce Brown, and fits Loyola's style. That game matches up as one of the best of the first round.

If Loyola wins, it could play the third-seeded Volunteers, who frankly have a similar profile to Miami. The Vols are a good team but definitely beatable. Loyola's Marques Townes, Clayton Custer and Aundre Jackson are a terrific three-man force. You'll enjoy watching this team.

And you'll love it even more when at least one of the squads above delivers as promised.
