What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/3/2017

Twenty teams to keep an eye on in 2017-18--Hoopville
Evansville: The Purple Aces won’t be a favorite in the Missouri Valley. Some are picking them in the basement. They make this list, though, because Marty Simmons is one of the last coaches left running a true motion offense, as this sport’s obsession with ever-shrinking shot clocks leads to teams running ever-more boring offenses with ever-increasing numbers of ball screens, isolation plays and 2-3 “spacers” standing around. Every purist and aficionado of good, team-oriented offense should enjoy the beauty of players working for a shot, cutting, screening and wearing out a defense without needing 25 dribbles per possession, like the Aces do. While they still can.
...
Northern Iowa: A second from the Missouri Valley. With all the hubbub about Wichita State leaving the Valley, it seemed many forgot just how good UNI was not that long ago-top 15 in the country in 2014-15, should’ve been in the Sweet 16 a year later. It is a fact the Panthers were not very good last year, but Ben Jacobson’s teams usually bounce back after subpar years. This is a big-time prove-it year for veterans like Klint Carlson and Adam Koch, who have shown in the past that when on they can lead their team to great things.

3. Missouri State

With Wichita State having moved on to the American Athletic Conference, the question in the Missouri Valley is which team (or teams) can step forward and carry the conference banner nationally. Paul Lusk’s Bears are one possibility, as Missouri State will be led by a senior forward in Alize Johnson who was not only the top newcomer in the Valley but a first team all-conference selection as well. In his first season with the program Johnson averaged 14.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game, posting 17 double-doubles while shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 38.8 percent from three.

Johnson is one of four starters back from a team that won 17 games last season, and in total six of the team’s top seven scorers are back. The front court tandem of Johnson and Obediah Church should be one of the best in the Valley, and senior Ronnie Rousseau III and junior Jarred Dixon among the players on the perimeter who will look to help account for the loss of second-leading scorer Dequon Miller.

F Alize Johnson, Missouri State

The Frank Phillips (Texas) JC product was the Missouri Valley’s top newcomer last season, averaging 14.8 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. Johnson put up solid shooting percentages from the field (48.8 percent) and from three (38.8) in his first season at Missouri State, and he posted 17 double-doubles (the same number as Jock Landale). This year’s Johnson is expected to lead the way for the preseason favorites in the Valley, and he’s more than capable of doing so.

Region talent turning to airwaves: Two former Region talents will shift from the basketball court to the broadcast booth this season as longtime Northwest Indiana basketball coach Renee Turpa and former Andrean and Valparaiso University standout Jamie (Gutowski) Stangel will serve as basketball analysts. The pair will serve as color commentators for Valparaiso women’s basketball as part of the ESPN package “The Valley on ESPN3.” Turpa and Stangel are expected to broadcast each women’s home game alongside either longtime Voice of the Crusaders, Todd Ickow and current men’s basketball analyst Dave Huseman.

Ickow and Huseman will continue to call all of Valparaiso’s home games either on WVUR-FM or exclusively on ESPN3. Ickow will travel on the road with the men’s team this season and call games with Valparaiso assistant director of athletics for media relations Aaron Leavitt.
