What's Up In The Missouri Valley 11/24/2024

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Sunday, Nov 24th--Hoops HD

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-MISSOURI STATE VS HIGH POINT (Cayman Islands Classic). High Point is a really good team and this event is a huge opportunity for them. If they can win the whole tournament, which we certainly think they are good enough to do, it will go a long way toward them landing inside the bubble come March.

-MIDDLE TENNESSEE VS BRADLEY (Myrtle Beach Invitational). We weren’t expecting much from either team this year, but both come in with just one loss and both can leave this event with a fairly impressive resume and start to the season if they’re able to get the win today.

-DRAKE VS VANDERBILT (Charleston Classic). Both teams are unbeaten, both have been tested this year, both have picked up nice wins in this event, and both appear to be a hell of a lot better than what any of us thought about three weeks ago! This one should be fun. For Drake, it’s probably more important because they won’t have the same types of opportunities at quality wins that Vanderbilt will have throughout the year.

Quick Takes: Tennessee keeps rolling; Duke rebounds--BRACKETVILLE

Additional Quick Takes:

Vanderbilt is also 6-0 after beating Seton Hall and Nevada in Charleston. The Commodores get surprising Drake in the title game Sunday evening. Bracket Effect: While it’s too early to know how the victories in Charleston will shape up in three months, it’s a solid start – another climb up the seed list (and pushing the immediate bubble).

Speaking of Drake, the Bulldogs took out Florida Atlantic to get Vanderbilt on Sunday. Another win would be quite an early trifecta for Drake and the Missouri Valley. Bracket Effect: Drake will be the new AQ for the MVC on Monday, and would be in the at-large conversation, regardless.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Saturday, Nov 23rd--Hoops HD

NEWS AND NOTES:

-Drake has emerged as a surprise team this year! They knocked off a pretty good Florida Atlantic team 75-63 in the Charleston Classic to stay unbeaten on the season. This followed up a very impressive win over Miami FL just the day before.

The Breakfast Buffet: Chaz Lanier, Georgia/Marquette, Maxime Raynaud--College Hoops Today

On The Side

  • Is Drake’s Ben McCollum the next Josh Schertz? Don’t rule it out of the realm of possibility. Like Schertz — who’s now at Saint Louis — McCollum was a Division II head coach prior to getting an opportunity in Division 1. He’s led Drake an impressive 5-0 start in his first year with the Bulldogs, which includes a victory over Miami.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Friday, Nov 22nd--Hoops HD

NEWS AND NOTES:

-In one of the more surprising results of the day (at least to me) Drake knocked off Miami Fl 80-69 in the Charleston Classic, and at no point did it really ever feel that Drake was not in control. I didn’t think Drake would have much at all this year after the roster overhaul from a year ago, and I thought Miami FL would end up being a solid top 25 team. This is why I don’t bet on sports.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-DRAKE VS FLORIDA ATLANTIC (Charleston Classic). Both teams are coming off of really nice wins, both really needed those, and both could really use this win today. FAU has looked good this season and just missed putting some really nice wins on their resume in the previous week, but they got a nice one yesterday against Oklahoma State. Drake remains unbeaten after getting a nice win against Miami FL yesterday. Both appear to be good teams, but both also have limited chances at notable wins, which is what makes the games in this event so important.

-ILLINOIS STATE VS MCNEESE (Paradise Jam). If McNeese is going to build up their resume at all, they need to do well in this event. It’s pretty much as simple as that.

HIGHLIGHTED GAMES:

-MIAMI FL VS DRAKE (Charleston Classic). Both teams are unbeaten and Miami has blown through their buy games. I wouldn’t call this a huge test, but Drake probably is better than the teams the Canes have been blowing out. I still think Miami can have a big year and make the NCAA Tournament. This event is a chance for them to get some notable wins away from home that aren’t just home buy games.

Valley Heating Up--Valley Hoops Insider

MVC/OVC Women’s Weekly Award Winners--Valley Hoops Insider

Dinnebier & McCowan Keep Shining

(St. Louis, MO) – Career high performances opened the door to the Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conferences’ women’s weekly award winners. Well known stars in each league were on display this week. Western Illinois’ Raegan McCowan and Drake’s Katie Dinnebier are adding to their individual legacies.

MVC and OVC teams are also receiving some national recognition.

Players of the Week

Drake is ranked sixth in the CollegeInsider.com, ‘Women’s Mid-Major Top 25’ poll. Reigning MVC ‘Player of the Year’ Katie Dinnebier poured a career-high 40 points during Drake’s showdown with the Big Ten’s Iowa. While the Bulldogs dropped that game and their previous one at Creighton, Dinnebier averaged 27.5 points and four assists. The Valley’s ‘Player of the Week’ is averaging 19.8 points per game and is closing in on 1,400 career points.

This is the second straight week that Drake has claimed the weekly award winners’ top recognition.

Newcomer Weekly Award Winners

Southern Illinois’ Gift Uchenna enjoyed a spectacular week. The Saluki forward averaged 25 points and eleven rebounds during the team’s two games. She scored a career high 34 points and grabbed a personal best 17 rebounds against IU Indianapolis. The Valley’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’ produced SIU’s sixth highest all-time scoring output.

Rookies of the Week

Speaking of Bradley, Braves freshman Ellie McDermid is the Valley’s ‘Freshman of the Week’. While McDermid averaged ‘just’ 7.5 points, her floor game was outstanding averaging 8.5 rebounds and connecting on 64% of her shots. During that loss to Lindenwood, the Green Bay native recorded her first career double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds.

OVC/MVC Weekly Honors--Valley Hoops Insider

Scoring Explosions

(St. Louis, MO) – Missouri Valley and Ohio Valley Conference players achieved weekly honors by producing outstanding scoring explosions. Career high scoring performances and key road wins highlighted this week’s games.

Once again, only one player receiving weekly honors played a game on their current team last year.

Players of the Week

Texas Tech transfer KyeRon Lindsay scored a career-high 27 points during Murray State’s road victory over Middle Tennessee. The 6’8 forward came off the bench to spark Murray and to earn this week’s MVC ‘Player of the Week’ honor.

Newcomer Weekly Honors

Missouri State won two games and Vincent Brady II was a major contributor. The IU Indianapolis transfer averaged 18 points during the Bears’ two victories. This week’s ‘Newcomer of the Week’ is averaging twelve points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Freshmen of the Week

Redshirt freshman Sam Orme has stepped into a significant role at Belmont. The Valley’s ‘Freshman of the Week’ averaged 12.5 points and seven rebounds as the Bruins knocked off Lipscomb and Air Force. Orme is one of four Bruins averaging double figures (11.3) and leads Belmont with eleven three-pointers.
