All-Illinois and All-Chicago Awards, 2018-19 Season--The Catch and Shoot
All-Illinois Team
...
Cameron Krutwig, Loyola
...
All-Chicago Team
...
Marques Townes, Loyola

Cameron Krutwig, Loyola
...
Chicago Player of the Year

Cameron Krutwig, Loyola

No disrespect to Marques Townes, but finally I get to have my say on why Krutwig actually deserves superlative honors for Loyola.

Krutwig led the Ramblers in: usage, offensive rebounding rate, defensive rebounding rate, block rate, and fouls drawn per 40 minutes. He was second on the team in offensive rating and effective field goal percentage, trailing only 3-point specialist Cooper Kaifes in both. In MVC play, he also led the team in assist rate.

By various formulas, Krutwig held an edge over Townes. He had a nice edge in Value Add’s offensive and defensive efficiency ratings, and a slight edge in PORPAG, which is akin to MLB’s WAR. (PORPAG estimates how many more points per game a player creates compared to a “replacement,” or average, player.)
...
Chicago Freshman of the Year

Cooper Kaifes, Loyola

Kaifes is practically the default choice as the only local freshman who received major minutes. With Lucas Williamson injured, Kaifes was thrust into the starting lineup for nine games.

He was the Valley’s second-best 3-point shooter at 46.9%, trailing only Drake’s Brady Ellingson. Kaifes hit double digits in scoring eight times and made three or more threes in seven games.

Illinois Defensive Player of the Year

Elijah Childs, Bradley

Don’t worry. Illinois’ only state representative in the NCAA Tournament isn’t getting shut out of player awards. Childs, the Arch Madness MVP, took on a much larger load as a sophomore and delivered, averaging 12.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks.

As those 1.4 blocks suggest, Childs was a handful defensively. The tempo-free efficiency numbers like Childs, too. In the MVC, he ranked No. 4 in block rate and No. 3 in defensive rebounding rate.
...
Illinois Coach of the Year

Brian Wardle, Bradley

Wardle got some pretty bad press last week, but ultimately that doesn’t take away from his rebuilding job at Bradley. The Braves won five games in his first year on the job in 2015-16, and in year four of the Wardle era they earned their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2006.

After a solid non-conference campaign, Bradley opened MVC play at 0-5. They really got rolling in February, though, and became the hottest team in the Valley, which carried into Arch Madness. They enter the NCAA Tournament with a 20-14 record.

The Braves won their three Arch Madness games by a total of 8 points. Sure, some luck goes with that, but credit is also due to good coaching.

Am I promoting the brand enough?
Chicago Coach of the Year

Porter Moser, Loyola

Like Chicago Freshman of the Year, this award comes by default. Yes, Loyola won a conference title and Moser, in the grand scheme of things, did a really good job following up on last year’s Final Four run.

But Moser didn’t have much competition as the top coach in Chicago this year. Loyola enters the NIT at 20-13 (60.6%). None of the other four Chicago metro area schools have a winning record.

Don’t be surprised if ...

Bradley coach Brian Wardle meets with some degree of hostility at his news conference. Wardle and the school’s sports information department took the bizarre step of attempting to ban veteran beat writer Dave Reynolds from covering a press event to discuss the upcoming tournament with the Braves, who qualified by winning the Missouri Valley Conference. Reynolds has been covering the team for 29 years, but assistant director of athletic communications Jason Veniskey told Reynolds, “You don’t promote the Bradley brand” and told him player interviews were off limits. The United States Basketball Writers Association protested. The school since retreated from this stance, but not before turning one of the happiest occasions in the basketball program’s recent history — this is the first NCAA bid since 2006 — into a sorry occasion.

63. Bradley

While this ranking may not be promoting the Bradley brand, the Braves could’ve done a better job of that themselves if they hadn’t opened conference play 0–5 and lost to the likes of Eastern Illinois in non-conference play. Nonetheless, their late-season turnaround was impressive, and their slow motion jog through the Missouri Valley tournament, including a revenge victory over Loyola Chicago after they lost in the semifinals to the Ramblers last year, earned them a date with Michigan State.

Bradley

Armon Brummett, Decatur MacArthur

A 6-foot-4 freshman guard, Brummett has played in 23 games, averaging six minutes and totaling 13 points and 16 rebounds.

Peter Hanley, Peoria Notre Dame

Hanley played in 27 games as a freshman in 2015-16, but the 6-7 senior forward has played in only 16 games over the last three seasons, including six this season. He has six points and two rebounds in 18 minutes.

Nate Kennell, Metamora

A 6-6 junior guard, Kennell was voted the Missouri Valley’s sixth man of the year. He’s averaging 9.4 points and 2.4 rebounds and shooting 40.3 percent from 3-point range. He hit five 3s and scored a game-high 19 points in the Braves’ victory over top seed Loyola in the MVC Tournament semifinals.

Antoine Pittman, Rockford Auburn

A starter in 45 games over his first two seasons, Pittman has played in 18 games with three starts this season. The 6-3 junior guard is averaging 3.2 points and 1.7 rebounds.

Why you should cheer for BU: If you’ve grown up and lived in Illinois most of your life, you likely know someone who went to Bradley. This is the first time in 13 years Bradley is going to the Big Dance. Bradley is a deep team, and unlike a lot of lower-seeded teams, the Braves do not rely on just one or two main players.

Strange fact: Bradley is loaded with international players. Half of the team hails from a country outside of the United States. South Sudan, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Cameroon and Netherlands are all represented on this squad representing a small private school in central Illinois.

What's Up In The Missouri Valley 3/18/2019

March Madness 2019: Teams who have won automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament--CBS Sports
Missouri Valley: Bradley

In the Missouri Valley Tournament, Bradley made history: the Braves scored just 15 points by halftime against Northern Iowa, then roared back from an 18-point deficit to pull off the biggest comeback victory in MVC title game history. The final: 57-54. The Braves will be in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years. Back in 2006, Bradley was in via an at-large; Sunday's victory is the first conference tournament championship for the school since 1988. Bradley will either be a 15 or 16 seed depending on how the low-major conference tournaments unfold in the coming week.
East: Duke is the overall No. 1 seed, but Michigan State is a heck of a No. 2--The Athletic
No. 15 Bradley Braves

Opponent: No. 2 Michigan State

When: Thursday in Des Moines, Iowa

Record: 20-14 (9-9 Missouri Valley)

How they got here: The No. 5 seed in Arch Madness, Bradley knocked off Missouri State, 2018 Final Four darling Loyola-Chicago and Northern Iowa in successive days. In the championship game, the Braves rallied after scoring only 15 points in the first half and being down by 18 in the second.

What you need to know: This is Bradley’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since its Sweet 16 run in 2006, and it comes after an 0-5 start to the conference season. While the core of the team is a group of seniors, junior point guard Darrell Brown (14.7 points per game) leads the team in scoring, and sophomore Elijah Childs is the team’s best rebounder and shot-blocker.

Spotlight on: Coach Brian Wardle was the youngest head coach in Division I when he got the Green Bay job at age 30 in 2010. After five years and a couple of NIT appearances, he jumped to Bradley and has won 20 games in back-to-back seasons.

15. Maurice Newby, Northern Iowa

Matchup: No. 3 Missouri vs. No. 14 Northern Iowa (1990 first round)
How much time? Two seconds. The Tigers and Panthers were tied at 71 when Maurice Newby launched a desperation 3-pointer with four seconds left on the clock. The shot fell, and Missouri couldn't inbound in time. That capped a shocking first-round upset.

Best part: Newby came off the bench to hit the big shot.

...
6. Donte Ingram, Loyola-Chicago

Matchup: No. 6 Miami vs. No. 11 Loyola-Chicago (2018 first round)
How much time? 0.3 seconds. Miami led 62-61 in a first-round matchup against the Ramblers, who had one final possession. That's when Ingram took a pass at the March Madness logo and drained a long-range 3-pointer for the victory.

Best part: That was just the beginning of a Final Four run for Loyola-Chicago.

Southern Illinois: Following a quarterfinal exit from the Missouri Valley Conference tournament, head coach Barry Hinson announced in his postgame press conference that he was leaving his post at Southern Illinois. It hasn’t been made clear if Hinson is resigning, or being fired, as he said, “It is time for me to step away,” during an emotional press conference. In seven seasons at Southern Illinois, Hinson went 116-111 — twice winning 20 or more games in a season. But the Salukis never made the postseason as the once-proud Valley program has struggled to find its footing since six consecutive NCAA tournament appearances earlier this century. Hinson has also spent time at Oral Roberts and Missouri State as he’s fifth all-time in Missouri Valley Conference wins.

Best part: The precision of the passing. It's the ultimate out-of-bounds play.

Conference tournament roundup:
...
The Missouri Valley Conference Tournament had a split in the quarterfinals between the higher and lower seeds winning. No. 1 Loyola-Chicago ran out to a 22-point halftime lead against No. 9 Valparaiso en route to a 67-54 win, then No. 5 Bradley continued their late surge by using a big second half to knock off No. 4 Missouri State 61-58, their seventh win in nine games. In the evening session, No. 2 Drake used a big first half to take care of No. 7 Illinois State 78-62, and No. 6 Northern Iowa edged No. 3 Southern Illinois 61-58 in what will be Barry Hinson’s final game as head coach of the Salukis after seven seasons at the helm.
...
As noted earlier, Barry Hinson announced that he has coached his last game at Southern Illinois after seven seasons at the helm. A one-time head coach at Missouri State, Hinson said that he agreed before the season that unless the Salukis make the NCAA Tournament or NIT, he would step down.
The Morning Dish – Monday, March 11, 2019--Hoopville
About halfway through that game, the Missouri Valley championship game got going, and it was a quite unlikely matchup with No. 5 Bradley and No. 6 Northern Iowa battling. The Valley was intensely competitive this season, with three games separating first place from seventh including two teams that tied for the regular season title. In light of that, while unlikely, this wasn’t a shocking matchup as even Loyola-Chicago and Drake, who were the other semifinalists, were far from unbeatable.

In this one, Northern Iowa ran out to a 14-2 lead and ran the lead to 18 less than three minutes into the second half, as they had shut down Bradley for most of the early going. Bradley then scored the next 12 points to get back in the game, then as they were down by one later on, they scored the next six points to take the lead for good and hold off the Panthers 57-54 to win their first Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title in 31 years.

Bradley actually started the season 6-1, including wins over OVC contender Jacksonville State, SMU and Penn State. Conference play, though, was a different story, as the Braves lost their first five games, three of them at home, and was staring at a 3-7 mark just past the halfway point. They won four in a row and six of seven, and had a chance to finish above .500 but lost at Loyola-Chicago to end the regular season. Bradley became the fourth team since the MVC went to 10 teams to start conference play 0-4 or worse and not have to play in the first round of the tournament.

In St. Louis, they were masters of the close game, pulling out three straight one-possession games to win the title. But that is something they have done all year long, as they were 4-1 in one-possession games in the regular season. They will enter the NCAA Tournament having won nine of 11 games.

SATURDAY’S LOSERS
...
Loyola: We won’t be seeing Loyola and Sister Jean in the 2019 NCAA tournament following last season’s memorable Final Four run. The top-seeded Ramblers were upset by Bradley in the semifinals of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament on Saturday as Loyola’s two Conference Players of the Year, Clayton Custer and Marques Townes, were held to only 17 points combined on 7-for-27 shooting.

Loser: The NCAA Tournament darling of 2018

Loyola-Chicago stole the hearts of college hoops fans across the country last season. And what little sliver of the world they didn't, their team chaplain, Sister Jean, did.

That won't be the case this season. The Ramblers, a 1 seed in the MVC Tournament, fell Saturday in stunning fashion to 5 seed Bradley, ensuring they won't be the auto-bid from the MVC -- and that their postseason destination is likely the NIT.

College Basketball’s 2019 Coaching Carousel--College Basketball Talk

Hinson announced his resignation on March 8 after Southern Illinois lost in the quarterfinals of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. He spent seven seasons with the Salukis and did not make an NCAA Tournament. Former SIU point guard Bryan Mullins, who is the associate head coach at Loyola-Chicago , is considered a runaway favorite to get the job.
