Tonight’s MenuThe Morning Dish – Friday, November 17, 2017--Hoopville
Early season tournaments are about to start in earnest, as a few of them start today and will be the highlight of the matchups on tap.
In the Charleston Classic, Auburn takes on Indiana State to get it going (11:30 a.m.), then Old Dominion takes on Temple for the afternoon session. The night session starts with a matchup of Clemson and Ohio (5 p.m.) before finishing up with Dayton taking on Hofstra.
The Puerto Rico Tip-Off, which has moved to Myrtle Beach in light of damage done by a natural disaster, starts with Illinois State taking on South Carolina (11:30 a.m.) before Boise State takes on UTEP. In the night session, Iowa State takes on Appalachian State (5:30 p.m.) and Tulsa takes on Western Michigan right after that to close the date.
We may be barely a week into the college basketball season, but it’s not hard to make an argument that a number of teams and conferences just might be already entering the most important 7-10 days in their regular seasons.News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Friday, Nov 17th--Hoops HD
It’s completely counter intuitive, and it probably shouldn’t be the case for a number of reasons. And no one will argue that conference play and conference tournaments are the heart of any team’s schedule if you were to ask any coach. For schools like Illinois State and Hofstra and leagues like the Missouri Valley and Colonial Athletic Association, though-to name just a couple of many-this has become a critical time of the year, as it is far and away the best time to earn wins over bigger-name (read: football-dominated) schools, the kind that help build power ratings and might get the attention of a certain tournament selection committee in March.
With top programs and conferences becoming ever more intent on colluding to avoid scheduling schools outside their exclusive country club, early season tournaments have become easily the best option-some might say just about the only one now-for those outside the TV Conferences circle to make some noise. They also have taken on increased importance because of their rarity, as with so few chances at these teams after this point, it’s very possible that teams’ and leagues’ performances in them now could be used for or against them when NCAA tourney selection comes in March.
A team like Illinois State knows all about a perceived lack of quality wins costing it a spot in the NCAA Tournament. As such, the Redbirds’ 69-65 win over South Carolina on Thursday in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off quarterfinals was an important step, one with national cachet coming over a Final Four team this past spring, and also one over a team from a Southeastern Conference that has been excellent in the early going and thus should pay off all year long.
Illinois State is a far, far different team from a year ago. Four starters departed the Redbirds, including two via grad transfers, and ISU also has been hit by a rash of injuries before the season. Dan Muller’s team had just eight healthy scholarship players for its opening 98-87 loss at Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday.
The Redbirds weren’t good defensively against FGCU, but they were against South Carolina, using a sticky 2-3 zone that limited the Gamecocks to 29.5% shooting. Add in 18 points from Saint Louis transfer Milik Yarbrough and 17 from blossoming sniper Keyshawn Evans, and ISU posted a win it and the Missouri Valley Conference can be proud of, continuing the conference’s good start through one week with a 19-3 record including six wins at road or neutral sites. Just as important, the Birds also now get a chance to play a Boise State team that is expected to be near the top of the Mountain West, and also will face either a Big 12 (Iowa State) or AAC (Tulsa) team, of which wins against also could only help an MVC team in the ratings and in perception.
...
Today’s Menu:
ESPN tourneys in Charleston and Myrtle Beach continue early in the morning, starting with South Carolina against UTEP in a consolation bracket game (10:30 a.m. Eastern, ESPNU). Auburn and Temple meet in a Charleston semifinal in the morning, too (11 a.m., ESPN2), and a busy day also includes Illinois State against Boise State (1 p.m., ESPN2) and Iowa State against Tulsa (7 p.m., ESPNU) in Myrtle Beach, plus Clemson facing Hofstra in Charleston (9:30 p.m., ESPNU).
The Bahamas Showcase opens with some intriguing games. Vermont takes on Bradley from the Missouri Valley, and later in the day Weber State meets Iona.
NEWS AND NOTESUnder the Radar Games of the Day: Bahamas Showcase Quarterfinals--Hoops HD
...
-Illinois State picked up a somewhat surprising win against South Carolina in the Puerto Rico Tipoff. That in and of itself was a nice win, but it’s even nicer when you consider that they have the opportunity to continue to add to their resume.
...
HIGHLIGHTED GAMES
...
-BRADLEY VS VERMONT (Island of the Bahamas Showcase). We think Vermont can land inside the bubble, and to make that happen it is important that they do well in (win) this tournament.
...
-ILLINOIS STATE VS BOISE STATE (Puerto Rico Tip-Off). Really looking forward to this one after watching both these teams pick up nice wins yesterday.
...
-NORTHERN KENTUCKY VS JAMES MADISON (Island of the Bahamas Showcase). I really like this NKU team, but they have a razor thin margin for error and in order for the selection committee to even consider them they need to basically win virtually everything.
The first game of the day features the Missouri Valley Conference’s Bradley Braves against the America East’s Vermont Catamounts. The Braves are 2-0 on the season, being led by Donte Thomas who is averaging 11 points and 9 rebounds through the first two games. While they may have a shot at contending in their conference this year, their opponent is a clear favorite in theirs. Vermont is 0-1, but that one loss was a tough 4 point road game at Kentucky. Four different Catamount players were in double figures in that game, showing that this team is very deep and very dangerous.Bell-Haynes makes go-ahead FT, Vermont edges Bradley--CBS Sports

...
Ryan Taylor, Evansville
In a conference that has featured Final-Four-caliber Wichita State teams and tournament-level squads from Northern Iowa and Illinois State, the Missouri Valley’s scoring champion has come from Evansville each of the last four years. If the first three games of the season are any indication, that streak could run to five. He’s posted 23.2 points per game so far against inferior competition.

MVC Women's Basketball Weekly Notebook (Nov. 14)--The Missouri Valley
The first three days of the college basketball season have been largely uneventful, not surprising when schedules are littered with endless guarantee games and schools seemingly have little interest in even playing at all so early in November. Here are some quick-hit notes looking around the country after the first weekend of regular season hoops:Under the Radar: Nov 15th--Hoops HD
...
The same goes for the Missouri Valley, whose teams won six of their first eight contests, including three early road wins. Indiana State notably drilled Indiana at Assembly Hall, Missouri State won at Western Kentucky and injury-depleted Southern Illinois scored a surprisingly decisive win at defending Big South champion Winthrop. Add in convincing home wins for Evansville (over Arkansas State) and Bradley (IUPUI) plus Loyola holding off stubborn Wright State, and the Valley couldn’t have gotten off to a much better start.
...
Florida Gulf Coast’s 98-87 win over Illinois State was one of the most entertaining games of the weekend. A stat that stood out to us: the Eagles’ pounded the Redbirds on the glass to the tune of 48-24. That’s a bad sign for ISU-which stayed in the game with Keyshawn Evans going wild for 28 points including seven three-pointers, plus Phil Fayne stepping up with 24-but encouraging for FGCU as it later faces teams like Middle Tennessee State, Texas-Arlington, Wichita State and Rhode Island.
...
Another name-brand team going down: Iowa State, which was handled at Hilton Coliseum by Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The Panthers trailed early but won going away 74-56, a great win for a Milwaukee team that has been through plenty of upheaval and is on its third coach in three years, and a sign of just how much work ISU has to do this year.
Chad is joined by David, John, and Rocco as they run through all 22 UTR conferences. The featured conference is the Metro Atlantic, and we look at the strong starts that Niagara, Monmouth, and Fairfield have gotten off to. From there we discuss Florida Gulf Coast’s good start, Bucknell’s early struggles, Vermont’s close loss at Kentucky, the Big West’s and Missouri Valley’s strong starts, this week’s Top Ten, and much more!! And as an added bonus, we have a live look in (on tape delay) at this year’s Team of the People, the Cal Baptist Lancers!!News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Thursday, Nov 16th--Hoops HD
HIGHLIGHTED GAMESOpening to Mixed Reviews--Valley Hoops Insider
-ILLINOIS STATE VS SOUTH CAROLINA (Puerto Rico Tipoff). We weren’t expecting all that much out of South Carolina this year, but they’ve looked pretty good winning their first two games and could emerge onto the national scene if they do well in this tournament.
-AUBURN VS INDIANA STATE (Charleston Classic). Indiana State already has a big win at Indiana. If they pick up some more notable wins in this tournament then we will definitely start paying attention to them. Auburn is…well…probably in for a long year.
...
-LOYOLA CHICAGO AT UMKC. A win for Loyola gets them to 3-0.

From there, we talk about how the American Athletic Conference has two teams ranked high in Wichita State and Cincinnati. That leads us to look at two noteworthy schools that changed conferences this off-season, Wichita State and Valparaiso, and how they appear to be going in opposite directions at the moment. While the Shockers should contend in The American, Valparaiso lost Alec Peters and several other seniors, and favorites in The Valley this season appear to begin with Missouri State. The Morning Dish – Saturday, November 11, 2017--Hoopville
The surprises start with Indiana losing handily to Indiana State 90-69 in Archie Miller’s debut. He is the first Indiana head coach to lose his debut since 1924. Offseason Realignment. Wichita State’s jump to the American Athletic Conference created a mini-domino effect in O26 land: Valparaiso joined the Missouri Valley, prompting IUPUI to fill the Crusaders’ spot in the Horizon. The Summit League, now down to eight members, wound up the ultimate loser here.
Alize Johnson – F – Missouri State. Wichita State’s departure aside, there’s a reason Missouri State was picked to win the Missouri Valley this season: Johnson — who averaged 14.8 points and 10.6 boards last season — is really, really good. The athletic forward logged 17 double-doubles and could be a first-round NBA Draft pick next summer.

-MISSOURI STATE AT WESTERN KENTUCKY. Missouri State is who a lot of us like to win the Missouri Valley this year, and Western Kentucky is a team that we all liked as a top forty team this year until their offseason went completely to hell. Indiana State makes 17 threes to ruin Archie Miller’s debut at Indiana--College Basketball Talk
Five things we learned from college basketball's opening night--Sports Illustrated
2. Archie Miller has his hands full in Bloomington, Ind. — The Hoosiers were destroyed by Indiana State in a 90-69 home loss in Miller's first official game as Indiana's head basketball coach. Miller might be checking to see if he purchased a two-way ticket back to Dayton after his team fell behind by 21 points at halftime, adding further misery to Indiana's desperate fans.Eight snap judgments from college basketball's chaotic opening night--The Dagger
Miller left Dayton for Indiana this offseason with hopes of re-establishing the Hoosiers among the Big Ten's elite. While that may still happen, Friday's lopsided result likely reminded Miller it won't be an easy feat.
Indiana State beats Indiana, 90-69. Indiana State coach Greg Lansing makes $250K a year. Indiana coach Archie Miller makes $279K A MONTH.
— Darren Rovell (@darrenrovell) November 11, 2017
Indiana State, projected to finish eighth in the Valley this season, was on pace to hang 100 on the Hoosiers until the final six minutes when it finally eased off the gas pedal. The Sycamores led by as many as 30 points and sank 17 of their first 22 threes, torrid shooting aided by an Indiana defense that appeared confused defending ball screens and was slow to rotate and close out on shooters.Indiana State upsets Indiana in Bloomington, 90-69--Mid-Major Madness

The Archie Miller era in Bloomington is not off to a swell start, to put it nicely.
The Hoosiers fell victim to Indiana State -- a team picked to finish eighth in the Missouri Valley Conference -- by a score of 90-69 on Friday on Indiana's home floor. It makes Miller the first Indiana coach since 1924 to lose a season-opening debut.
Archie Miller is the first #iubb coach to lose a season-opening debut since Everett Dean in 1924.
— Matt Glenesk (@MattGlenesk) November 11, 2017
Who did Everett lose to?
Indiana State.
Indiana State hit 17 of its 26 3-point attempts to bury the Hoosiers, who have an even more brutal slate ahead. Friday nights game is one of seven of a grueling 20-day stretch which includes a road trip to face No. 23 Seton Hall, capped by a November-ending battle against No. 1 Duke at Assembly Hall.
It's going to take time and patience for Indiana fans to see Archie Miller's vision through, but it's hard to imagine the new era getting off to a worse start.

Only in a league like the ACC could the Tar Heels be projected to finish fifth—such is life in college basketball’s deepest conference. The Heels will have to make it work early in the season without Joel Berry—he broke his hand after punching a door during what must have been a crushing loss in a game of NBA2K—but that shouldn’t matter against Northern Iowa. With a healthy Berry, Pitt transfer Cameron Johnson, Luke Maye, Theo Pinson and freshman Garrison Brooks, the Tar Heels will once again be a Final Four contender.
