Fr. SF Cade Tyson (Belmont)

Cade Tyson is a small forward at Belmont University. The 6-foot-7 freshman is averaging 13.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and is shooting 43.3 percent from three. Tyson chose Belmont over other offers that included Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, Wilmington, and Mercer.

Bracket Breakers 2023: 6 potential Cinderella teams that first must win their conference tournaments--The Athletic

Bradley Braves

Missouri Valley Conference
Killer Rating: 15.7

The Braves are riding an eight-game winning streak and are tied with Drake at 14-4 atop the MVC, where our model says the Braves are the best team and best underdog. Yet they get very little national attention. Well, it’s time to notice: This is the best Bradley squad in at least 15 years, with a highly efficient defense that keeps opponents at the perimeter, dragging their average possession length to 18.8 seconds (ranking 360th in the country) and allowing an effective field-goal percentage of just 45.8% (ranking 21st). And the Braves have taken their own long-range shooting up a notch over the past couple of seasons: 39.9% of their attempts are from downtown, well above average. As the conference heads toward Arch Madness, keep an eye on Malevy Leons, their Dutch-born big man with 48 blocks and 46 steals heading into Wednesday’s game at Valparaiso. No Missouri Valley player has gone 50-50 since the MVC started keeping records 42 years ago.

Further note: Drake is awful on the offensive glass (ranking: 307th, down from 55th when the Bulldogs were an 11-seed two years ago). And they don’t force turnovers (ranking: 219th). They are not built for the styles underdogs win with in the NCAA tournament. Our model sees a difference of fewer than 3 points per 100 possessions between Bradley and Drake in its basic power ratings but a gap of more than 10 percentage points in their tournament chances against an average giant.

Hoops HD Daily Rundown – Wednesday, Feb 22nd--Hoops HD

UTR WATCH:

-ILLINOIS STATE AT DRAKE (Missouri Valley).  Drake is tied with Bradley with just two games to go, and the two will face each other on the final game of the regular season this Sunday.  I like how this Drake team is now playing and feel if they had been playing at this level all along they wouldn’t need to win the MVC Tournament to make the NCAA Tournament.

UNICORN

Ben Krikke, Valparaiso

  • Thresholds: 90.0 MIN%, 7.5 BLK%, 15.0 AST%, .400 3P% (min. 5 att.)
  • Krikke’s line: 95.0 MIN%, 9.8 BLK%, 23.5 AST%, .400 3P% (2/5)

Ben Krikke has always been a solid interior scorer and a serviceable flyswatter in four years with Valpo. But after showing flashes of a 3-point shot his first two seasons, Krikke is rediscovering that aspect of his game in Missouri Valley play. It’s not a major part — 31 total 3-point attempts in 18 MVC games, compared to 225 shots inside the arc — but it’s enough to keep defenses honest. In losses to Southern Illinois and Illinois-Chicago last week, Krikke averaged 29.0 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 blocks, and he scored a career-high 34 points against UIC.
