68 reasons to look forward to the 21-22 college basketball season--College Hoops Today
64. The Missouri Valley
This league should be one of the top-10 conferences in the sport this season. Loyola Chicago, Drake, Northern Iowa, and Missouri State all have postseason potential.

25. Brice Calip, Missouri State
Stop me if you’ve heard this story before: An electric 5-foot-8 guard leading a hungry Missouri State team deep into March. Now, Calip is not the kind of scorer that Jackie Stiles was, but the Bears — who made it to the Sweet 16 last season before falling to eventual champs Stanford — can put together a more balanced scoring attack that could potentially make Calip even more lethal. As a junior, when she was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, she averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.2 steals per game. With nearly all starters returning, and the motivation of knowing this team could make its deepest postseason run since that 2001 season, there’s going to be pressure on Calip to deliver.

19. AJ Green, Northern Iowa
The 6-4 senior was the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in 2019-20. Then he played three games in 2020-21, averaging 22.3 points in those outings. Then Green stopped playing. He had surgery on both hips, seven weeks apart, last winter. Then his father Kyle, a Panthers assistant coach, left to join T.J. Otzelberger’s new staff at Iowa State. Now Green is back, and who knows what comes next. If he’s anything like the player he was two seasons ago, and that makes Northern Iowa anything like it was two years ago, when it won 25 games and finished in the top 25 nationally in offensive efficiency, thanks to extremely efficient 3-point shooting? Well, then the Panthers will threaten to upend the presumed MVC hierarchy and become a legitimate threat in March. Or will some pretty significant injury issues take a toll over the long run? Green might be as impactful a variable as there is in college basketball this season.
