Other results of note: Loyola-Chicago pulled away from Norfolk State 64-45; Tyler Sharpe’s 30 points helped Northern Kentucky knock off visiting Illinois State 79-64; Bradley blew out Georgia Southern 81-51; USC beat Long Beach State 87-76 behind 28 points and 12 rebounds from Onyeka Okongwu; and VCU won a good mid-major matchup over visiting Missouri State 61-51  Tonight’s Menu
It’s a relatively light night with 20 Division I games on tap, but it will pick up after this. It’s also highlighted by a doubleheader.

Top 10 Surprises & Disappointments of the College Basketball Season So Far--Watch Stadium

BIGGEST SURPRISES

8. UNI – Ben Jacobson’s Panthers are 10-1 for the first time since 2011-12 and have a star in AJ Green, but were still picked to finish behind Missouri State and Bradley in the Missouri Valley. The lone loss came against West Virginia, while there are wins at Colorado and against South Carolina down in Cancun.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENTS

9. Missouri State – I was extremely high on Dana Ford and the Bears, and I wasn’t alone as they were picked to win the Missouri Valley. They lost to Little Rock to start the season and are 6-6 overall with setbacks to Buffalo and a down Miami team down in Charleston. Three of the six wins have come against bottom-tier teams: Alabama State, Cleveland State and Mississippi Valley State.

The Other Top 25

Rank School Record Change Our reasoning This week's games
10 Northern Iowa 10-1 3 They may be flying a bit under the radar, but the Panthers are now 10-1, which includes last week upset of Colorado in Boulder. Sophomore guard AJ Green has stepped as a go-to scorer and has hit double figures in all but two games this season, including three 20+ point performances in his last four games. 12/22 vs. Marshall

Other results of note: Charlotte got 27 points from Jordan Shepherd to get above .500 with a 67-57 win over Valparaiso; Delaware won the in-state battle over Delaware State 86-78 in Wilmington; Rider won the first MAAC game of the season by a 74-64 margin over visiting Marist; and Jacksonville State has had a tough start, but got a big 85-59 romp over visiting Evansville.
Bradley announced that leading scorer Elijah Childs will be out 3-6 weeks with an injury to his right hand suffered in Saturday night’s blowout win over Georgia Southern. The do-everything junior forward is also their leading rebounder and shot-blocker, and while this hurts now, the hope is that he doesn’t miss much of the Missouri Valley schedule. The Braves have won three in a row by 30 or more points.

COMMENTS FROM JOHN
– Northern Iowa is a team that can potentially get above the First Four later on in the season. Their best wins are against South Carolina down in Cancun and at Colorado. Their only loss is against West Virginia, and it’s possible they could have an at-large case depending on whether or not they’re able to win the regular season crown in the Missouri Valley.
