Early numbers are probably not easy to find, but all we have to do is look at how a number of early games have either been decided on or sealed by a three-point shot or two. Tyrese Maxey sealed Kentucky’s opening night win with a three as the shot clock was running down. One night later, Illinois State was clearly not bothered by the longer shot in the second half as they went 9-13 from deep to come back and beat Belmont. Last night, Winthrop pulled away from host Hartford 67-57 with a couple of later three-pointers helping them pull away from being up by three, and UAB edged Troy 76-75 as Mahktar Gueye hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to pull out a road win.News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Friday, Nov 8th--Hoops HD
For good measure, Drake tied a school record with 17 three-pointers in their 86-55 romp over Kennesaw State. They took 29 shots from deep, almost half their shots for the entire game, but given the clip at which they hit them, can you blame the Bulldogs?
-LOYOLA CHICAGO AT FURMAN. Both teams are 1-0. Furman won this one last year before going on to Villanova and beating them as well. You may recall they exploded onto the scene with back to back road wins against teams that were in the previous year’s Final Four.News, Notes, and Highlighted Games: Saturday, Nov 9th--Hoops HD

-NORTHERN IOWA AT NORTHERN ILLINOIS. I kind of like this UNI team, and this is a winnable road game that could get them off to a solid 2-0 start.
-VALPARAISO AT SAINT LOUIS. Both teams won their opener, and while we don’t expect either one of them to be frontrunners in their conferences, this is still a game worth keeping an eye on.

-Belmont and Illinois State went back and forth before Illinois State was able to pull out the win at home. It was a good showing by a Belmont team that had a fair amount of roster turnover, and I don’t want to say it was a bad loss in the sense that they can still bounce back, but the margin for error is so small for a UTR team that they need to be able to win games like this one.Second-half rally lifts Illinois State's basketball team to season-opening win over Belmont--The Pantagraph

The upset express arrived next in Springfield, Missouri – where MVC favorite Missouri State absorbed a one-point loss on the chin at the hands of Little Rock. The Bears could still be a dangerous March opponent, but these types of miscues aren’t ideal for mid-majors who hope to be in the at-large conversation.

Arch Madness: The MVC announced a four-year extension with the Enterprise Center in St. Louis to host the league's men's basketball tournament. 2020 will mark the 30th anniversary of their partnership, with the tournament becoming a staple in the St. Louis area. The arena was recently renovated as well, with new locker rooms and restrooms, improved cooling and heating systems, new lighting and a 40x40 video board. Let's hope the Redbirds can come out on top this year for the first time since 1998 and their first championship in the Enterprise Center.
VALPARAISO 79 vs. TOLEDO 77
Valpo basketball is back and in full swing after a victory over Toledo to open up the season. While outside expectations are pretty low for the program this year, the team truly believes they have what it takes to win. The Crusaders finished 15-18 last season (7-11 in the MVC), beating Indiana State in the opening round of the State Farm MVC Tournament. With the team losing five key players this past offseason, coach Matt Lottich will look to his young guard Javon Freeman-Liberty and senior Ryan Fazekas to take that leadership role and teach the other players to be selfless. Freeman-Liberty was on the MVC All-Freshman and All-Defensive Team last season, averaging 11 points and 4.3 rebounds. With a new culture and energy in the building due to the young athletes, the Crusaders will look to take what they learned from their strong offseason and put it to use on the court.
