Winter sports work towards 2024-25 season--The Torch

Both men’s and women’s basketball teams spent part of their summer training here on campus. The men’s team recently released their nonconference schedule, which includes some big time matchups. One to be noted is the Big 10 conference team of Ohio State on Dec. 17 in Columbus, Ohio.

The men’s team has several key returners, including the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, Cooper Schweiger. He is expected to put up big numbers this year after such a stellar performance last season, averaging 13.9 points per game and 5.4 rebounds per game. Other important returners include Isaiah Stafford, averaging 16.9 points per game last season and 1.62 steals per game, ranking third in the Missouri Valley Conference. Darius DeAveiro also returns, bringing in key assist numbers with 170 points last season, ranking third best in Valpo history for a single season.

The men’s basketball team also welcomes 11 newcomers, alongside the six returning roster players. With a completely new look to men’s basketball, the team looks to improve. The team is rallied by head coach Roger Powell Jr. in his second season leading the Beacons.

The women’s basketball team is also welcoming six new team members, alongside the seven returners from last season. Returning for her 5th year, Leah Earnest is a huge asset to the team this season. Leading the team with 16.5 points per game, she earned All-MVC Second Team honors last season.

Some more notable returners are Naveah and Saniya Jackson. Both appearing in all thirty games last season as freshmen, the Jackson twins will definitely be players to keep track of. Saniya Jackson was also was one of seventeen freshman in the country last year with 50 or more steals and less than 45 turnovers.

Although their schedule has yet to be released, the women’s basketball team is looking to improve on their record this season. With the addition of several new players, transfers and freshmen, they are looking towards improvements across the board.

Showdowns among NCAA Tournament teams highlight first week of season--Mid-Major Madness

Charleston vs. Southern Illinois (men; Nov. 4 at noon ET)

In one of the earliest games of the season, Charleston and Southern Illinois face off in the tipoff of the Field of 68 Opening Day Showcase at noon ET.

Charleston is coming off consecutive seasons with at least 27 wins and trips to the NCAA Tournament. The Cougars will be led by new head coach Chris Mack following the departure of Pat Kelsey to Louisville. Ante Brzovic is the top returning scorer after pouring in 12.1 points a night last year.

SIU is coming off a 19-13 season in a tough Missouri Valley Conference. The Salukis are also under a new head coach as Scott Nagy assumes the reigns. They will look to replace Xavier Johnson, who averaged a team-best 22.2 points per game last season.

FAU vs. Indiana State (men; Nov. 4)

FAU and Indiana State were two of the top mid-majors last season and have recently made deep runs in March. The Owls went to the Final Four in 2023, and the Sycamores played in the NIT championship game last season.

The Owls return only two players who saw action last season in Tre Carroll and Jack Johnson, which equates to five percent of their scoring. So, it will be a brand-new team for first-year head coach John Jakus, who replaced Dusty May.

The Sycamores will also have a new head coach in Matthew Graves, who replaces Schertz. Jaden Daughtry is the leading returning scorer, and he managed just three points per game last season.
